I think Jack has a lovely eye and will prove to be a cracker. I find one horse never replaces another in our hearts but we make space for the new ones.

Thank you all, some lovely and very comforting comments! It is just so sad and at the moment the big black cloud over my head won't lift but I am very glad to have Jack, he's such a cheerful soul I think he's very good for me at the moment. It's very hard to feel sad when he's got such a cheeky expression!

Oh Michen you had me in tears at my desk. What a lovely, lovely tribute to Basil. Your love for him really shines through. As for Jack, whether you decide to keep him or not I think you have an absolute stunner on your hands! Can't wait to hear more about him x

I think Jack looks capable of growing up to be very nice indeed. Lucky boy, landing in a home where he is sure to be treated royally!
Your tribute to Basil was lovely and heartfelt. He had a great time with you, and will have known this. One of the very fortunate ones. xx

I think Jack is genuinely grateful at the moment! He's had dentist/vet/farrier/physio in a matter of days so he should be lol!

As the fellow owner of a fence jumping bog pony, you have my sympathies! But seriously, Jack looks very cute and I hope in time he can help in some way with the grief of losing Basil so suddenly xx

Just a little before and after photo of Jack for anyone interested. These photos are three weeks apart and all he's had is decent grass, haylage, chaff, linseed and lots of long reining walk work out hacking/over poles. Still a way to go but not a bad improvement. Oh and teeth doing/worming/physio!

He looks so much better already. Well done.

It might be the angle, and I'm no expert, but his right fore looks to be changing shape quite significantly.

Your tribute did bring tears to my ears, particularly as I have - literally - just lost a horse of a lifetime. I only had him for 18 months before his ERU rendered him completely blind and I had to have him put down. This is the first time in over 30 years of horses that I haven't either had or been looking for a horse, but finances aside, something really did break when I had to put down my lovely big hearted young horse who in the last few days was totally relying on my voice as to where he needed to go in his box. He looked stunning and well and it was so unfair. Like you I have had many horses over the years but not many stick as lifetime ponies and he was one of the three I will always hold in my heart. I am very very sorry to hear about your loss. You are right, we dream of relationships like that with our horses but it doesn't come along very often and while my boy was a stonking 17.1, he was the pony I dreamt of when I was a child desperately wanting her own pony. I hope you have fun with Jack and can look back and enjoy your memories of Basil.

Not wanting to hijack the thread but Luci07 I had my boy put down two weeks ago as he was going blind from ERU. He had some sight but was losing it rapidly. Miss him so much. Our horses will always haveca special place in our hearts

So sorry to read this. Never had even heard of this horrible disease before and hope to never come across it again.

I've only just seen this thread.

Michen, if Jack could have any conception of how much you have loved your previous boys, I believe he would consider himself the luckiest pony on the planet.

Your tribute to Basil brought me to tears - your love & respect for each other shines through in the pictures and in your words. A partnership that not many are lucky enough to experience was yours. I know you wish it could've been for longer but how oh-so-very lucky you both were to have each other.

Good luck with Jack, I think he will help fix your broken heart even if he and you don't stay together forever x
