I wondered if anyone knows of any good breeders of these who are planning a litter soon? I have been looking on behalf of my parents (retired long time experienced Basset owners) as after a gap they would now like to get their next Basset but I am having trouble finding any litters and any I do find are miles away up north and get snapped up before we get a chance to consider them. Others litters I have found advertised around London/Home Counties area look dodgy as hell and we will only buy from a breeder we are happy with.

They are after a lighter weight type Tri Colour (no Lemons) and not bothered if a bitch or dog as had both in the past. They would also consider an older dog up to 4 years as long as it has no issues.

We are on the South Coast and would travel up to 3-4 hrs for the right dog. Lovely home where it would be sole dog with pretty much 24hr company and plenty of beach and forest walks. If it's an older dog it would need to be sociable with other dogs as we have quite a few in our family and help each other out with cover for holidays etc.

Any help/advice appreciated as we haven't looked for a puppy for a long time and there are obviously many bad breeders in it just for the money these days!

Find a breeder or kennel or stud dog you like to be aware of litters before they get sold/booked.
 
A pack basset will be less heavy & they are lovely hounds.
I nearly ended up with a working hound a couple of years ago when he came into rescue but we tracked his tattoo.
 
Thanks for the replies; would an ex hunt hound not need to be more of an outside dog? As they follow their noses anyway - just having mental pictures of my Dad (in his 70's) chasing after something following its nose...! We like to walk them off lead.
 
Might be better looking at the basset breed rescues then you know what you are getting & the hound should be assessed. Spare hunt puppies are the same as any other puppy - they get used to living in -but is an active young basset the right choice?

We retired Legend and Widget here from the Albany and they settled in to being lap dogs straight away and virtually never slept outside again; incredibly clean in the house too! Any hound or terrier has the ability to work and that should never be taken away from them or them scolded for it; it is what they are bred for, same as collies for rounding things up and spaniels for always questing. Saying that, usually (but each hound is different) the ex hunt hounds are glad to be brought into family life and soon settle, ours certainly didn't wander. My only reservation would be that they are used to canine company and if you can't give them, even if it's just one other dog, that it could be more difficult for them to adapt. The Albany often have spare puppies though so might be worth a try if you want something younger.

I think I have found the almost perfect dog! Randomly asked somebody who is a friend of a friend (on Facebook of all places as she had a lovely profile picture of a Basset and on further investigation I could see she was obviously a member of some Basset clubs and shows them) and it turned out that she knew of an older bitch who has ended up back with her breeder due to the owners personal circumstances. Breeder is a KC judge and highly knowledgable and clearly cares a lot about her dogs to have taken this one back in as she wasn't happy with the situation it was in.

She sounds perfect (only downside is she is a year or two older than we would have preferred but you can't have every box ticked!) - housetrained, part of a pack of 12 house/kennel Bassets so good with other dogs and good with kids etc as lived with a family before. Also of a type and colour that we prefer and a name we like too so very excitedly awaiting photos! She has had a small amount of dental work done since returning to her breeder so she has been vet checked recently too. Apparently a sweet and perky character and they are 2 hrs away from us so not too far. Very excited especially for Dad if this works out! He does like his walks so could have coped with a puppy and although in his 70's is very sprightly but I think Mum was worried about having a young puppy in the house so this girl should be a lovely compromise.
