what are bassett hounds like...?
I would love to have one but have heard they get bad eyes, ears, skin and backs...
before I give up I would like to know what other people think really...
also are they expensive to buy...?

Have a chat to MFH_09 she will tell you all the bad bits to know!!

I love them to death, only have half a Basset at the mo but wanting a full version.

Best thing is get 1 from a reputable breeder not a puppy farm & then you shouldn't have to many problems health wise.

I was brought up with them too, I had 4, mother and 2 pups which we kept then later a rescue, I had 2 types, english (the mother and 2 pups) and americian (the rescue), I prefer the american version due their slender/slim body, less wrinkly, and bit more active, he sure can run fast for a basset!

my American Basset, Freud (RIP)

they are lovable, funny, cuddly, and are sure lazy!

With correct food, exercise and keep them slim as possible to keep them healthy as possible i don't see why not.. I would happily have one again but they are so expensive and difficult to buy (waiting lists in many places) Steer clear of puppy farms. Their life expec isn't very long, all my bassets died around 11/12 years old.

I love basset hounds! We've had a couple and they're great dogs!

We did have some health problems with our older one, Lucy, she developed epilepsy when she was 7 but this was managed by medication til she was 9. (dont think this was anything to do with her being a basset!)
Our 'baby' is now 6 (lucy's last pup) and she is the laziest dog in the world - when she wants to go for a walk she will but if its raining, cold, wet etc...there's no way you'll drag her away!
She also prefers to sleep on a sofa - when we got a new sofa she wasnt allowed on it and she sulked for 5months!!!! Howling every night to let us all know she wasnt impressed!!!!
I really, really love basset hounds and desperately would like another but they're quite pricey now
I echo everyone else and say definitely go to a reputable breeder! (there is a specialist basset group who can point you in the direction of a breeder with available pups!)
Good luck
