I have a cob who is changing shape due to getting fitter, I don't think her saddle fits very well anymore and my instructor says that it looks tight on the shoulders. It was fitted by a master saddler and had it checked a few months ago - she did say that if Saffy changed shape it would no longer fit. I have been looking at the Bate Caprilli VSD and thought this might be a good idea as you can change the gullets. Just wondering whether anyone has one on their cob? And general feelings about this saddle - I would get the saddler to come and fit it for me and make sure that it fits.

The tree in most bates saddles tends to be quite curved, so if your horse has quite a flat back then the bates probably wont be suitable. However you could always try one?

hi .. i own an extremly wide sec d .. i used to use an ideal h & c on him .. but found it uncomfortable .. i now use the bates caprilla dressage in the widest plate and really love it .. the tree is not as curved as the wintecs .. in my opinion ..

Tree in a bates is the same as a wintec - they're the same saddle but in leather.

Ditto Sol - if you're mare is a typical wide, flat cob then a normal Bates (or wintec) won't suit her - tree too curved (esp at wider fittings) and the panels are to sloped at the back.

If you're looking for an adjustable gullet you can't go far wrong with the new thorowgoods (Kent and Masters are the leather version). Well made and well designed and the cob version should fit most cobs well. I love my cob T6 saddle and the horse does too.

Thank you for your replies, I have found a second hand Kent and Masters cob saddle for sale, going to buy it and keep fingers crossed that it fits!
She has big shoulders and started doing a choppy trot with the current saddle and on Saturday she was very unhappy to trot at all - not like her-she is normally forward going. So will buy this new saddle and get someone to come and assess it for me!
