I'm looking at buying a new saddle. I currently have a wintec and don't have a problem with it. Was thinking of buying a new one until a girl at the yard, who works for a tack shop, told me rather to save and buy a Bates.

I am going to try it out today hopefully. Does anyone have any experience with them. I need convincing either way.

they are all made by the same people - I love my Wintecs, great saddles, especially with youngsters....

I quite fancied a leather saddle last year but couldnt afford Bates so bought a Collegiate (again, same company) which is a leather adjustable saddle but not as expensive - I love it and we are looking out for another one just now....

I have a Bates GP and its a lovely saddle- it is an excellent saddle for the money and being adjustable it is great for youngsters. It is comfy, looks smart and the horses all seem to go well in it. You will be hard pushed to find something similar for the money

ETA It is sitting in the tack room gathering dust as youngster is for sale so I will be putting up for sale in a week or so. PM me if you are interested.

I have a Wintec 500 dressage (bought a few weeks ago) and a Bates GP (had about a year now) and i love them both. They are comfy and i love you can change the gullet. I definitely reccommend them. I also have an Ideal GP and i really dislike it compared to my other saddles.

I have had Bates and Wintec saddles, I preferred the bates at the time but now I love my Wintec dressage saddle, and love not having to soap and oil it!

I have had Bates and Wintec.
Same situation, nothing wrong with my Wintec but wanted a nice leather saddle so bought a Bates. Biggest mistake of my life! Had so many problems with it slipping around, my horse ended up needing physio and it took me 3 and a half months to get a refund. Have now bought a treeless saddle and still have my Wintec.
Obviously this is just my personal experience with a particular horse. I did think the Bates was very comfy.
