does anyone else have this problem, Ive had a Bates all purpose for my mare, slipped like no tomorrow even though it fit her perfectly, and 2other cobs up the yard have had the wintec version, also slipped loads.

If you have had this problem what saddle did you end up sticking with, Im sick of trying them and them being no good!

My mare is a white gullet in bates so extra wide, and needs something quite straight cut or VSD for her shoulders.

Our other horse has a Stubben saddle and his is great, because he has narrow withers, the mares back is like a picnic bench!

Maybe it's because the horse's back is so wide and maybe not much withers that the saddle slips?

Is it too narrow - sometimes that makes them slip too?

I had it checked by our yard owner who is a qualified saddle fitter and she said it fit her perfectly, inc the gullet measurement.

The other cob and hers prof fitted too and the same thing happens.

I have the same problem with my mare. Even though her saddle fits perfectly it slips due to roundness/lack of wither. I bought a Gel-Eeze non-slip pad, plus my saddler fitted a 'back strap' on the opposite side it slips to and he told me to use a non-elasticated girth. My saddle no longer slips.

Yes - Ideal and Albion are good for horses with flat backs.

Ideal are generally good on most horses as they do so many different sizes and will make you one to fit your horse at no extra cost - i.e. widen the tree at the back for our type of beastie!

Albion's are made along the same designs as German trees, so good for flatter backs.

Generally the German makes are good as many of their native warmbloods have flat backs and low withers.

i have a Wintec Cob or Wintec Wide they are called.

It slips forwards as she has no wither - despite being professionally fitted.

Limpet non slip pad helps - as does a non elastic girth.

Think im going to give up and buy a leather saddle...although with what money i dont know!!!

Just a suggestion, i used to have the same problem with my cob, i used to use an elasticated girth and a sheep skin numnah and mine slipped terribly. I now use just a plain atherstone leather girth with no elastic and a cotton numnah and dont have any problems.

Yes Spike my mare has a Bates saddle and it slips like hell, one day its fine the next its every where, its a little on the bigger side but nothing majorly and using numnahs to prevent but it still doesnt help what is going on with them?

I use a Wintec Cob saddle on my boy who is like a barrel (with no wither). It still slips but less than a few others Id tried! Ive found its better with a thin cotton type saddlecloth (nothing padded) and a Stubben String (cord) girth.
