Well I need to bath my newish horse, introduced him to the hose pipe, he was fine, but I have access only to cold water, will this be ok?, His previous owner used baby shampoo and he shone, do you think that is ok?
Also am I best wetting him all over, applying shampoo on him or the sponge , lathering him up , then rinsing off, curry the excess water off and put him in the stable for the night.

Any further advice would be great it must be 20 plus years since I last bathed a horse and can't remember the correct way, if there is one.

i bath my 2 with a hose pipe and tesco's apple/tea tree shampoo and seperate conditioner!!! used to bath Sec A with baby shampoo but its too expensive!!!! i wet one whole side, i bought a pink brush from tescos with a sponge in the middle, so lather up all one side then rinse well, and then do the other side and i do their tails last.

wet him with cold water, shampoo, rinse all the suds off, sweat scrape him dry and pop a summer sheet on him. Put him in his stable overnight with his summer sheet and he'll be fine.

If you do him in the morning on a hot day he won't need a summer sheet.
 
Well its bloody cold where I am just now! I bathed with a cold hose last week but I need to wash my grey for something next weekend so Ill do it by bucket: I just get a few buckets of water, sponge over his front end first (leaving a rug over his quarters) until he's properly wet then use either a horse shampoo or normal shampoo (baby shampoo, or I find Asda's own brand good!), which I rub in with a water brush. After, I just wash off with the sponge. Then I do his hind quarters. Obviously removing the water afterwards with a sweat scraper. Rug up with something like a Thermatex and leave in for a few hours (or overnight).

I hate washing the non-hose way as its so difficult to remove all the suds!
 
Thanks for you replies , Its just the cold water , poor thing , me I love a hot shower, cold , no thanks !!!!

Well he'll be done tonight after a ride and then he can put his PJ's on !
 
I prefer personally to bath my horse with warm water. I don't have access to hot water but I boil a few kettle's worth and mix with cold water. I think you get a better result with warmer water as it is not only more comfortable for your horse (especially over the back), but the shampoo/detergents work better than with cold.
I wash him by soaking a large absorbent sponge in the warm water, then pouring shampoo onto my horse directly and massaging in, keeping dipping the sponge into the bucket to add more water to his coat. Rinse off by throwing buckets of water over him. In the summer I may wash with warm water and rinse with a hose - If I feel it is a warm day.
 
In the winter I use a bucket of warm water, get a sponge and wet them and use shampoo and scrubbing brush to get all the grease out.

Then I use cold water to hose him off

Mean mummy haha but we have a box that we use to do it in and have rugs ready to chuck on when he's had excess water scraped off.

Never done mine any harm

well i gave my girl a bath last week after our hack, she was still warm so i think thats a good time to do it,i then scraped excess and put her in the sunshine. It is getting nippier now in the evenings, but as long as the sun is out or its not too cold a cold hose is fine. Maybe invest in a thermatex rug as they are suppose to be brill for drying horses pronto

ive had to train my boy to let me bath him and use the hose. i started sponging him the first few times and only doing two legs at any one time so he didnt get too fidgety. then i introduced the hose just to his tail. then i went higher with it on his rump. then i hosed one side of him, lathered and rinsed. then his mane and then the other side but only ever do one side wet, lather, rinse before attempting any more otherwise they soon get bored, cold and annoyed and itll stop you getting further next time. i can now bath him every saturday with a hose and cold water. good job too. had to spend hours getting him ready for todays show!!!good luck.
