I've got this battery isolator on my lorry - this part has to be screwed in to, or next to one of the battery terminals (difficult to see from the side!)

Firstly does anyone know what this type of battery isolator is called, as I need to speak to my mechanic about it.

Secondly the last few times I've fitted the isolator it has sparked several times as I screw it in. This makes me a bit nervous - I'm worried about getting a shock, although I haven't done yet.

Any idea why it is has started doing this? I'm going to ring my mechanic later this week to ask him but just wondered whether anyone on here knows why it might be happening.

Yes its a simple open type basicly as you screw in down it makes the conection
so what is normaly enclosed inside a switch is exposed hence seeing a spark, if there is something swiched on when you operate it the spark will be bigger , Im not keen on this type, the kind that has a removeable key is better... you wont get a shock but there is a chance of ignition if you have gas coming from the battery/s which can happen if they have been charged or the Living gas system!!!!....

That sounds dangerous! So I won't get a shock, but something might ignite?!? The living gas bottle is nearby, but I always switch it off so there shouldn't be any gas around from that! (I rarely use the gas hob.)

There shouldn't be anything switched on in the lorry. Could it be that the lights are switched on in the living area? I need to check I suppose.

What worries me really is that it has only started doing this for the past month or so.

Is it a big job to change the type of isolator that is fitted? (Are you 100% sure I can't get a shock? I'm a bit of a wuss and fit it at arms length to make sure I am not touching any metal or wires under the lorry!)
