Finding it difficult too....my mare puts on weight so easily, bit like me
All this wet weather doesn't help either, too much green grass. Keep going though, its worth it when the weigh tape shows afew more kilos dropping off, even if it does seem to take forever....good luck!!!
and AES mare that looks pregnant. She only gets a handful of hi fi lite to hide the vit supplement in and I cant split them to put her on no grass (there is not that much in the field anyway)
It is starting to worry me. She was skin and bone when I got her 18 months ago and I have never had a horse that keeps weight so well so have started trying to ride her more but its not shifting. A bit like my own wasteline which should be with all the extra riding I am doing
Yes, this is the fattest my boy has ever been. He doesn't look like a TB at the moment thats for sure. He is getting exactly the same feed as my sons 12hh laminitis prone welsh mountain
and thats just so he gets his joint supplement.
I've tried fencing him on a smaller 'diet patch' but he just jumps over the fences as he pleases
Until a month ago she was the only horse on the yard who wasn't obese (thanks to me turning up at 6am to get an hours hack in before work and coming back later to do the same!) but she's rapidly catching the others up.
The perils of ex-dairy pasture and a YO that will not allow restricted grazing/muzzling of any kind. Thank god I'm leaving!!
Definitely fighting a battle but just about keeping on top of it I think... I wouldn't say I was winning but he isn't getting any fatter..not getting any thinner though either!
He comes in during the day, has a slice of soaked (overnight) hay at lunch time, then worked late afternoon / early evening and fed a couple of handfuls of chaff with a handful of high fibre nuts to carry his joint supplement. Our grass is better than I'd like but if he's on any less, he just escapes out of the field (mains electric, post and rail fencing, and all
) to get to better grass.
I try to work him 6 days a week, plus at least a couple of morning walker sessions a week if possible, but I don't think the walker helps his spavins so have stopped that, hence the expanding waistline.
I have far too good grazing and we are not allowed to restrict the grazing to small paddocks, again ex-dairy farmer. However i can use a grazing restrictor. I just want to know how my horse can put on 8kg in two weeks
with being in during the day with nothing, out at night with a grazing restrictor and exercise. I give up
yes! fatty mc fatterson was doing so well with her slimming but now we have had more rain, and a flush of grass we seem to have hit a wall. Shes now out at night with a muzzle on, and in during the day with a small amount of soaked hay. shes also ridden twice most days, how is this possible!?!?!!
edited to add pics of our weightloss to date (in 3 months) just to try and spur myself on!!
Before -
its crazy isnt it! I do wish there was a happy medium between stupidly good doer and hatrack, its a constant battle in spring/summer/autumn
bloomin horse is only allowed to eat for 3 months of the year!! Hopefully once i can increase her fast work we should be able to start shifting it again. Its just powerwalking thats brought us this far!
thankyou, i need to get her fit now tho - its all the more difficult when they're coming back from injury too isnt it! She could still loose a few more kg, i much prefer her on the slightly lean side, as she has issues with her front feet and extra weight certainly doesnt do them any good.
I made paddock pillows ( as i will not use haynets ) and fill them with soaked hay for overnight in the stable, it slows down the spead that she shovels it in .and out all day with her greengaurd grazing muzzle on . google ( Paddock Pillows) if you dont know what they are. ive been using them for a long time now. also good for using in the field
"paddock pillows" look like a great idea, that's my job for tomorrow.
i'm very envious of all of you with your tons of extra grass, i've been feeding hay for months to keep my lot looking right, the grass just didn't come through this year in spite of only 3 or 4 horses on 6 acres, fertilising last year, etc.
not eating anything in the day, will make your horses body think it's in for a hard time,ie going in to starvation mode, and then any food it does get, through grazing muzzle will store as reserves/ie fat!
horses are little and often feeders ie grazers so would probably benefit from small holed hay net in day, weighed out, morning and lunch to make it last, if really piggy horse put one haynet inside another to slow it down!
i do have tons of grass as i have 14 acres at home and i only have 1 horse ... but better to have more space ( manage and muzzle and use Paddock Pillows ) than not enough space.
Ive not had a problem this year thankfully, i've got 6 horses on 10 acres and with restricted grazing and stabling overnight they are all not looking too fat at all. The Highland (aka Dyson) has to have her hay in 2 small holed nets to stop her consuming it in 5 mins but apart from that they're all doing alright!! Our grass has been superb this year though, unlike the last couple of years!!
His lordship is not actually putting weight on, but despite a restricted diet and plenty of exercise he aint shifting the pounds really.......

I'm in exactly the same boat, horse hasn't gained any more weight since Spring but isn't exactly losing any either. When I stop to think that all my efforts at maintaining sparse grazing and riding ten bazillion times a week are only maintaining her weight at the current level, it does make you wonder what would happen if we didn't bother! Doesn't bear thinking about.

You're right BC. Popped his girth up another hole though tonight - so feeling a bit better. That's three holes in 3 weeks. So maybe I am doing something right
the plastic garden trellis you buy from any garden centre,
i use paddock pillows in my stables with no problems, and i also use them for feeding hay in the fields in the winter ,keeps my horse busy working at getting the hay,and stops the hay from blowing around, and also the seed from the hay falls into the ground as my horse pushes the pillow around.
I eat the most at work (2 breakfasts, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, 5pm snack and dinner plus biscuits and snacks), but in a weigh-in last week, I still weigh the least (I am the 2nd tallest).
I'm struggling with Fudges weight still, just as he was slimming down he injured himself and has been off work for three months. He has gained lots of weight over the last month despite being on restricted grazing.
He's just coming back into walk work now so hopefully he'll lose some soon.
