Baydale's Boys: An update and Lionel Dunning lesson vids

But they DO have nice tails! :D

All looking great, if a bit "you're not the boss of me . . .okay, maybe you are" as befits healthy boys on a nippy day.

Lionel makes me laugh. The "take a pull, take a pull" is a pretty common one, as much to make people hold their rhythm and not fling themselves at the fence as actual advice. You also hear, "wait, wait" and "hold, hold". It took me ages to realise it doesn't actually mean "slow down" so much as "don't change anything" although only after I ground into the bottom of many fences and got hollered at for pulling! ;)

The boys look great and go you, no way I could ride 3 with a bald head in this weather.......in fact no way I could ride 3 all in one go full stop!

That's quite some team you are building!:D

Love the videos but had to watch on silent, but from the comments above I shall revisit with sound later. Not had the pleasure of meeting Lionel he sounds like a real character!

Takes me back,does that....
A certain amount of mind-reading necessary, but,by god,the man knows his stuff....
Lucky you,to be able to appreciate Lionel like this!
All looking good by the way,you do undersell yourself, you know :-))
Still waiting for you to come and 'stressage' some of my lot..... X

Wish I could ride like that on bad days :p All looking somewhat keen and ready for the season. Do love the Baydale gang *yoinks*

Hope skiing was good btw :D

Fab vids, very educational, and all the ponies are looking fab! As always you look sickeningly effective and poised ;) Jupe and Cal look SO much stronger than last year, I love Cal's little JA bounces :p :D Thanks for posting them :D

I like the idea of sharing others' lessons, tigers_eye started it I think. I'm not sure about effective and poised, but then it's very easy when someone's telling you what to do and when isn't it? :o

That was brill thanks for posting.
No cc form me:D just loving seeing all the CB' in action, is there any chance I can send you my cheeky lad, you would make a much better job with him than I do:)
I am another one who is in awe of how you manage to do all of this, even fully fit I would be on my knees jumping all three:)
Having watched that I am determined not to give up jumping.

Am now sitting with a large bowl of porridge in front of me cursing you for ruining my diet, does the whiskey go in the porridge or coffee?

I'm a bit full up with CBs at the moment, alwaysbroke, we could do a swap though? ;) The whiskey went on the porridge at breakfast time then the hip flask came out mid-morning and it went in the coffee - not my idea, I hasten to add!

looking really really good. Cal in particular looks twice the horse he was last year (and i'm not just talking about his waistline), when he learns to listen a bit more i think you'll have a serious pony there. interesting that he needs that bit more hand security to stop him taking the pee, and that it doesn't destroy his shape at all.

Thanks K. :) You can see how Cal lands in a bit of a heap - if I let him by flopping forward :o - so I guess that's why the hand helps with his balance on take-off. He'll be different again in 6 months, no doubt.

Great to see you all in action, and fascinating for me as I am going through the process of learning to ride the grumpy bay one like you ride Cal, which is a complete change for me, but he too jumps better from being ridden like that, even if it isn't text-book stylish (me not you!).

Could you see now much I was struggling to get my head around it after being on Jupiter? :o I'm sure he'll become more conventional when he's stronger but meantime it's whatever works.

Amazing and inspirational at the same time :)
How is Cal bred? He looks/acts/jumps very similar to my rising 6 year old.

Aw, thanks Lisamd, that's very kind. :)

Cal is by Renkum Calliano out of a (chestnut;)) Dallas mare, but I gather he's more like his mother than his father as I think she was a bit of a hot-head.

Glad you have your priorities straight ;). Very rewarding when they really start to develop think you could have quite a succesful season ahead.

My priorities change on 13 March when they finish hunting, so only a week when eventing and hunting clash badly. As for the other thing, it's just a bloomin inconvenience. :D

Fingers crossed you and I have a successful season with no need for the fall training to come into play. ;)

That's one of my friend's favourite sayings too - 'Smack it, I don't care if it bucks, at least it's a reaction!' - A saying I now use in my own lessons, except basically warning small nervous children that their ponies may buck just convinces them they definitely shouldn't be smacking it!

The more I see of Jup, the more I'm convinced I actually have his little sister and not an irish pony at all! She does the idignent tail swish and the gobby head toss too! Would you like another one? I'll have it back when it's a super duper winning pony :D :D

Do many small children fall off in their lessons with you? ;)

You could do a lot worse than have a Jup-a-like - maybe she went travelling from Yorkshire to Ireland for her gap year? :p

The boys are certainly doing very well!

They look amazing, and Cal appears to just be quirky, dont cha know, cos all those seriously talented horses have their quirks ;) :p

I am also of the opinion that at least get a reaction from everything you do :)Thats what I did - at least if the horse bucked he had to move forwards :p

Ps. I am glad to see that someone else "borrows" roadwork things ;)

Doing very well at keeping me on my toes, that's for sure. You know what I think about the "quirky" label, it's not to be used on my horses. ISZ's "queeky", yes, but not the other "q" word.

I didn't borrow them but I know the man that did....:D

They all look FAB!! :D Cal's improved so much from last year, you've done a fab job with him! Roll on the 1*'s eh :p

That's great that you can see the difference, sometimes it feels like I just slog away with them and not a lot happens - that's when the video evidence is useful to have! I think Cal has grown upwards too, I must get a stick on him to see how much.

they all look fab and full of attitude which I love :) I like the bit where you saying something like 'it's hard' about the exercise and Lionel says 'it's not supposed to be easy' :) Love that approach to teaching :)

Well done Kermit and thanks for posting the vids

You're welcome, Chloe. They're definitely full of attitude, just in different ways.

Lionel calls a spade a spade which suits me just fine. :D

Yaaaay for the Cheeky Boys - and brilliant, bald Baydale ;) All looking fab, although Jupe still, to me, has the megastar quality :) :) His canter looks much stronger than when I sat on him (or perhaps you are just doing a far better job ;) ) I think it's a problem sometimes that he finds things so easy - you have to keep challenging him to make him try... Cal is certainly pinging up into your hand - isn't it funny how some of them need that? And Marty looks full of verve in his inimitable way, I do think you do an amazing job on him, he doesn't look easy!

Glad everyone is on such good form, sooo looking forward to Oasby :) :) :)

Jup has presence, I think, and the canter is much better - I'd recommend giving your horse a 10 week holiday if you want it to improve in any way as I can't think how else he got better. Cal was very pingy, in lots of different directions it seemed. Marty was a bit surly but maybe because the hunt met at ours this week and he didn't get to go with them. ;)

Oasby it is then, I've got plenty of gin in. :D

Noooooo, nice tails means you can't think of anything else you want to describe as nice. :( Oh ok, I've just read the next sentence, whew.

I think the "take a pull" in time to the canter helps me a lot, I use "keep it the same" when I teach as it's so easy to stop doing anything on the way in and grind to a halt. I was a bit wishy-washy in the canter a couple of times when I turned to the line and then felt I was chasing, but once I got the quality canter I could "take a pull" - you've got to have something before you take a pull, and my god I had something with Cal.

Thanks, nicki, you'll laugh when you hear it with the sound on: me clucking, him as good as telling me to shut up and get on with it...

Team Baydale need lots more tuning up before we go out in public, but at least no-one will recognise me with no hair. ;)

I bet it does! Has he mellowed since then? ;) He does know exactly what needs doing and I think I've worked out what he means and how to do it most of the time. :o He gives me soooo much confidence which is what I need more than anything.

Will visit once the hunters are on holiday and I can get away, but only if you let me ride Bijou. ;) :D

Aw, thanks, teapot. :o I'm hoping that another 6 weeks of graft will make them less keen as I think our dressage is going to be interesting if not. :o

Skiing was great, I only had one day when I didn't do a lot but that was because my chemo-infected hand had blown up like a boxing glove and felt like it was going to explode. :( When I nearly fainted after one run I thought I should go back to the chalet.

Have not read all the replies, but must say I'm glad you told me which horses were which as they are all becoming the Baydale standard! Marty's bottom reminds me (fondly) of Liberty, whilst Cal must have doubled in weight since I last saw a pic/vid. I am not keen on Cal's behaviour, so the spare stable is still being held for Jup whenever you fancy sending him over!

I've had time to watch the vids now.

Jup looks loads stronger, still has attitude but it's not so 'bad ass' more teenager! He looks straighter, not so much 'which way?'

Cal really reminds me of Floss, the answer with her was to go for a really mild bit (simple Nathe) and keep hold at all times. Like Cal a 'pull' results in head in the air complaining but the engine keeps running underneath. She needs the security of the constant light contact otherwise she'll duck out or put in a really dirty stop.

Marty is just Marty!

Done!
I'll start giving her some oats.....

By "Baydale standard" I assume you mean fat and shiny and round in a show hunter kinda way? ;)

See I thought you liked a challenge and that Cal would be right up your street, but then Jup is more akin to Wicked Willie (I hope), so I can see the appeal. :D
