I was surprised to hear this equestrian commentator lady saying that it calms horses down "a bit like deers in the headlight" - makes it sound so nice and painless and fluffy.
I think a better analogy would be grabbing someone by the b*llocks. Have not twitched my horse and would only consider it in an emergency, as a last resort.
