Radio 4 is doing a hard hitting documentary programme about James Grey and the wider issues in the UK concerning the horse trade and welfare. It's on at 11am this Friday and will be on listen again for a week afterwards.

This programme was born during Operation Esther when I asked my contacts in the industry to persuade the BBC to commission the programme. They followed the whole James Grey trial and have interviewed various involved parties including vets and representatives of the rescue centres that took in the equines as well as horse dealers and abattoirs for the programme. I expect it to be hard hitting about welfare issues at this end of the UK horse market as well as appropriately scathing about the Greys.

Please listen.

Dedicated to all the brave people who helped with the rescue and with Operation Esther, who believe in horse welfare. You see, a small number of people can make a difference.

There is still much to do.

I hope they interview Patty then as that would be an interesting listen

The fact that it is on Radio 4 website tells you that it's on Radio 4.

Thanks for that. What I meant was - what is the frequency??

Excellent could've done with being an hour long but definitely got the point across.

I have to say though that John Parker comes across as a dinosaur.

He was GTF, yes.

Amymay short version..... outline of conditions found, charges brought and outcomes on the Amersham case. general consesnsus that there was no excuse for JGs actions. Wider picture of low end horse dealing and trading. Comment from dealers, auctioneers, abbatoir, eminent vets and welfare people with the conclusion that indiscriminent breeding of rubbish is creating a major prooblem of oversupply in the UK.

it will be on listen again (just not quite yet).

if you go to the Radio 4 website, look at schedule and click on spindles farm (11am) it will take you to the page where you should be able to click 'listen again'

I didn't think JG's "expert witness" John Parker came across as having much compassion for the horses and ponies that suffered and died at Spindles Farm.

I assumed a vets main concern was to put the animals health and welfare above everything else ...but obviously not in his case!!!!

He was dreadful! Heard a horror story from the USA yesterday: a horse at a show came down in the arena and was in obvious distress, as was rider. Vet advised euthanasia but would not do it until insurance company gave their permission, as he was terrified of being sued. This took place in front of the audience and it was over an hour before the poor animal could be put out of its misery.
