Episode 3

DURATION: 45 MINUTES
Barrister Gary Bell QC goes to Leicestershire to meet Mandy Everley, who lent her horse, Libby, out on loan. But Libby ended up in an abattoir and now she and her daughter want compensation. More importantly, they want to know why this happened.

A case we helped with and to highlight Missing on Loan cases, this was a heartbreaking case

Years ago my friend loaned her horse out, the loaner turned out to be a fraud and the horse ended up in sausages. Woman was caught/ charged, loads of evidence/ witnesses against her (she'd done this previously to others as well) but because she was 'not well' when the case came to court it was dropped, so she got off. :(

Poor people. Such a sad story.

I didn't see it as them going for compensation though, just a little money back for what they lost. To my understanding, compensation is money over and above that. They only wanted £300 for the value of the horse and £100 for tack. Very low value and not enough to compensate anything :(

Very upsetting for the owners without doubt. Whilst they did all they could to prevent what happened happening, I find it incomprehensible that some people STILL put their 'much loved' horses out on loan without doing thorough detailed research and checks. With all the past and present cases being highlighted on the internet and social media you would have to live in a vacuum not to know the dangers, and yet people STILL allow their horses to go to complete strangers, without even seeing where they are supposed to be kept :( As for putting aged horses out as 'companions' to this type of 'home' - it is just asking for trouble. If your horse is that aged, and unable to be ridden DON'T pass it on to someone else - do the Decent Thing, and guarantee its future by having it humanely put down at home. This happens far too often, and is just not fair to the poor bl***y horses involved. :(

Very sad and just shows you really have to check people out. I would be doubly cynical of anyone wanting to offer a companion home to any pony over 12hh tbh as I can't understand why they'd want to pay the costs of a large unridden animal, therefore I'd assume alterior motives. Prob a sweeping generalisation but I wouldn't take the risk .

I don't really understand how that was a good result. Yes they got some form of compensation/payback etc but the person who actually dishonestly obtained the horse(s) and then sent them to slaughter got nothing, also the slaughterhouse itself surely should of been fined or something. They should be checking they are the rightful owners. Disgusting and horrible thing to happen to the horses and upsetting for the owners. But I feel blame lies with them all partially, maybe not the second lady so much as she was in regular contact. I think they should be more of a point made of the dishonest 'loaners' who them sent them for meat and the slaugherhouses, they need to be fined or imprisoned surely they have pretty much handled stolen/stolen these horses! I would not be happy with that outcome if they were my horses.
I just hope the poor horses didn't suffer much :(

This is where the American civil court system works better because it deals with compensation for suffering and distress

Judge Judy comes to mind ....

The only way you can guarantee your horse is treat the way you want it to be treat is by keeping it in your own personal care.......... once it s gone , its gone and there s not much can be done.

I have a 16HH on loan which is not ridden,. wanted a companion for my horse and couldn't find a pony for love or money at the time. She is treated exactly the same as mine.
