Hi all

My family have recently purchased a venue that used to hold BD competitions two years ago. I know that there is alot of interest in us holding them again however we have no experience of this and so I was wondering if any one on here knows what is involved. PM me if you prefer. Competed BD at other venues just not sure what you have to do to run one yourself.

thanks

Hi there
I'm not 100% sure what you have to do, but thought I'd say good luck, and maybe it's worth e-mailing or contacting someone at BD who could maybe talk you through it.
I used to run unaff shows many years ago, and from experience, the best things to remember are:
1. Always have a sense of humour
2. There will always be someone who is not happy, you can never please everyone
3. The ones who keep coming back are appreciating your efforts
4. Enjoy yourself as much as you can!
5. It is usually rewarding and you can make some great friends!
Whereabouts are you?
Good luck!

The first thing to do is talk to the Regional Development Officer for your area, who is Katharine Perry. You can find her details on the BD website under Your Regions.

However, as a rule of thumb, even if a venue used to run BD competitions, a lapse of time and especially a change in the organising team means that approval to start up again will not be automatic.

Normally it is best to "cut your teeth" by running unaffiliated competitions for a season or two so you can iron out all the wrinkles. Once you have done that, you can talk to your RDO, show off your facilities and your finely honed organising team and apply for affiliated.

There is currently a moratorium on accepting new venues, but there is flexibility in those parts of the country where venues are few and far between.

Troi - changing the subject slightly - if we are not happy with a venue currently running BD is Katharine our 1st port of call there too?

Yes - always go to your RDO as first port of call.

It may be that the reason why you're not happy is something that can be rectified with a bit of advice. Sometimes an organiser may not even realise that there is a particular issue. It they don't realise, it can't be addressed.
