I'm hoping to do some affiliated dressage for the first time later this year.

I understand I can do Prelim classes without joining BD or buying a ticket.

Is there a rule about how many Prelim classes I can do before I have to start Novice classes ?

It's not that I want to out stay my welcome in Prelim, it's just that because my horse was imported as a 5 year old (albeit unschooled!) he'll automatically get 35 pts as soon as I join BD, which I think only gives me another 2pts in the Novice restricted section.

Also, if I did a Novice test on a ticket, and by some miracle managed to get over 60%, would points be added for this when I join BD ?

BTW I really think BD should published this kind of info on their website.
 
I don't think there's any limit as to how many prelims you can do and I'm almost certain you won't get points added if you enter on a ticket. If it helps to clarify things here's a link to the rules on the BD website (they're hidden in the competition section!):

From reading threads on here I think you may be able to have your horse assessed to get his allocated points down but I may be confusing this with downgrading!

I could get my horse assessed, and I'm considering this option, but it's quite expensive. One of my friends is definately going to do this with her mare because she was imported as a 7 year old and will otherwise get tonnes of points. My horse is a fairly similar standard to her's so I'll probably see how she gets on with the process first.

No limit on number of Prelims you can do as long as your horse stays below 38 points.

When he gets to 38, he's out of Prelim and will have to do Novice until he gets 75 points. All the points limits will increase on 1 December by 12 for Prelim and 50 for all other grades - just announced in BD Magazine.

Restricted depends on the rider and you will stay Novice Restricted until you earn a point at Elementary. Again this will change on 1 December to give riders a 14 point breathing space so that number of points can be earned at Elem before having to ride at Novice Open.

Assessment is £75 - but if your horse is a true Prelim horse, you could well be awarded 0 points. Assessment only applies to imported horses and is for precisely this purpose. To allow riders with relatively untrained imported horses have their automatic points level reduced to a realistic level for the horse's ability.

Downgrading is for any horse and depends on the rider group of the rider.

I'm hoping to do my 1st Prelim in July/Aug. I probably won't do a Novice until the end of the year so good news about the points going up on 1st December.

If I join BD in December I can then continue to do Prelims until 50pts and Novice until 125pts. Even if I don't get my horse assessed it would still take me quite some time to accumulate that many points.

Do you know if I have to make a decision about assessment as soon as I join or can I leave it a while and then get the points deducted later?
 
Well - strictly speaking, from 1 Dec you'll be able to do Prelim up to 49 points, 50 points making the horse Novice, and likewise Novice up to 124 points.

Yes, you do have to make an decision about assessment immediately on registration and the first competition. If you compete, you are deemed to have accepted the points awarded automatically. However, you can join and leave your horse unregistered and compete on a ticket.

The no of points given to imported horses will also go up on 1 Dec in line with the increases - so, if you're not going to do the assessment, your best bet is to join and register your horse prior to 1 Dec, as he'll be given 35 points at that point, and that will leave you 14 points until he can't do Prelims any longer. Leave it until after 1 Dec and he'll get more and you'll have less to play with.

However, remember, you don't get points for Prelim, so - by the time you've got 14 points at Novice, you should be pretty comfortable at that level and ready to leave Prelim anyway.
 
Jumping on this one - sorry - so my horse has 96 points and is currently unregistered (skint) does that mean he will be able to go back to Novice? Not that I want to - just wondered
 
Some of yor horses points will presumably be at elementary level so you may be able to return to do nov but as an open rider. I suspect there is more info to come out yet about oddities such as yours>
 
Yes a horse with 96 points on his record will be able to go back to Novice from 1 Dec.

Whether it is Open or Restricted will depend on the rider. If all the points were gained with the same rider then it will be Open as she will have gained at least 21 points at Elementary or higher.

However, if the points were gained by others, and the current rider has 14 points or less at Elementary (and no points higher) then he can do Novice Restricted.
 
So I'm back to Open Novice - might be handy to get us back into it - not competed for a year due to moving horses home and lorry being off the road (as well as being skint with new mega mortgage!)

Was going to go out unaff first!
 
my horse has 81 points (all gained at novice, just he went to the regionals and nationals after he ran out of novice points, so got more points at novice above the 74 limit) - he's never done affiliated elem. he's currently turned away for a year at least, but if by any chance he did come sound again would he now be eligible for novice classes again? i would propbably only do the music ones anyway for a bit of fun and it'll probably never happen, but just interested to know.
