Hoping someone can guide me here please. As per title I am contemplating entering our first BD comp doing Prelim. I was a member last year doing Team Quest but that membership has now lapsed as we hardly got to any Comps due to various horses being lame. I need to renew my Membership but believe I can enter without being a fully paid up member for now. Im not sure about the bronze, silver and gold bandings either.

Can anyone please advise me on this. I rang BD for advice but they were busy and no-one has rung me back so far. Thanks for any replies in advance.

You can enter prelim as an associate member with I believe your horse registered as an associate as well which are both free . As an associate member You would be in the gold section.

From memory things have changed with the new struture, and you need to be a team quest member, but if you email them they usually respond pretty quick :) (memory is a bit rubbish)

Easiest thing to do is have a good read of the rule book - here is the link http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/up...andbook 2016 Webfile Edited February 2016.pdf

But from what I've read you can go on a Class Ticket, but you and the horse have to be associate members which is free - this is taken from the rule book:
Class tickets enable those without a paid BD membership or horse registration to compete in an affiliated BD class. To compete on a class ticket, both the rider and horse must hold associate BD registration which is free of charge and be eligible for the class concerned. Each ticket enables them to enter one affiliated class.

You can buy the class ticket here:
http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/online_shop/category/tickets/products/british-dressage-class-ticket

Note - competing on a class ticket means you wont be eligible to qualify for Area Festivals or Regionals - to qualify for either of those you have to be a member at the time of competing.

Section wise you cant go in Silver - so you can either be Bronze or Gold by the looks of things, depending on what you and the horse have done in the past (again check the rule book to see where you sit based on the new sections). This is the comment in the rule book about Prelim Silver:
Riders competing in Preliminary Silver sections must be full BD members.

I'm presuming that's because those in Silver are trying to qualify for Regionals but I'm not 100% sure on why this rule exists!

Out of interest, why dont you want to join BD? To me there isnt much point in doing BD on a class ticket as your sheet doesnt count towards anything - you are better off saving your money and doing an unaffiliated class, many venues use listed judges for their unaff shows so if you could find a venue that you know uses listed judges you'll get the exact same experience unaffiliated, may even qualify towards something like Cricklands or Trailblazers, and save yourself the extra money on the entry fee! The venue I work at charges £11 for an unaff competition and £19 for a BD competition so you are saving a fair bit by going unaff!

Thanks for your replies. I have been competing at Unaffiliated dressage for some time on and off when the horse isnt lame ;) Just fancied a bash at Affiliated to see what if anything was different. Will see but thanks again for your help

You could always renew your Quest Club membership and register your horse as an associate horse, this would enable you to enter bronze section of prelim and qualify for area festivals? This is probably the most cost effective option if you don't want to go for regionals. You don't have to fully register then unless you want to compete at the area festival, in which case you'd both need to have a full registration. As a bonus, you can do the My Quest competitions too which are like Team Quest but as an individual. Good luck with whatever you decide :)
