BD membership - what should I do

I am currently registered as an non-riding member of British Dressage, as with Murphy competing BD with his para rider I had to be registered as his owner. Before I had been a riding member as we were competing together. However now Tarquin is going better and I am considering taking him to a few parties including stressage I was thinking that I might take up riding membership again.
My reasoning behind this is a) I might suggest to Murphy's para rider that this year I would like to compete occasionally on him when he goes to a show with her to keep my hand in and b) I would rather take Mr T to proper BD to get a more accurate idea of what judges think of him and this would be cheaper if I was a riding member if my memory serves me right. Then again I might end up paying out for it and not use it all year.
What do you guys think? Shall I go for it anyway, it might make me more up for taking Tarquin out stressaging or save my money?

How much is the non-riding membership? is the difference between that and the £50 ish for riding member greater than a few tickets at £6ish each?
 
What level do you want to compete at?

If Prelim, then Yes - upgrading to a competing member is your best option as a full member can compete an unregistered horse in Prelims.

If Nvoice or above then, depending on the number of times you intend to compete, you may be better off using class tickets @ £6 a class which will cover both you and the horse.

Full rider membership is £54 if you pay by Direct Debit (£60 otherwise) and horse registration is £50 - so you need to do the sums.

I didn't realise this! I am a full member competing at Medium, but also have a baby horse that i want to start. So i don't have to register him either? Will he get a record on BD website or not?
 
That's what I was trying to remember Troi. Its £32 to be a non-riding member.
I would only be starting Tarquin off at Prelims anyway just to see how we go competing and then would affilliate him if I thought it was worth it. Although I was hankering after doing BSJA or BE if he cops himself on a bit and he does seem to like jumping.
I already have to pay Murphy's BD fee and whatever I choose for myself.
Am beginning to think it probably is better for me to go full riding membership again as I wouldn't need a class ticket to compete Murphy at his level (Elementary) and could take Tarquin Prelim at without any extra cost.

laafet - thanks! So it is really a chance to get them out and see what a BD judge thinks?

Do they get placed or is it like going HC?
 
You still get rosette and money (if there is any), can qualify for area festivals and regionals although the horse needs to be registered by the time of the regional or if they qualify for the area festival final. Phew just been going over the rule book online.
Defo will apply to be a full member now.
 
if you are a group 5 rider (which you would be if you are competing at medium) you have to compete in the open prelim section and you arent eligible to qualify for the Area Festivals or the Regionals at prelim level.

Same for a group 6 rider aswell (thats one who is competing and getting points at elementary level above the 14pt buffer zone).
 
Tempi have they changed the rules over rider groups over the last two years as I'm sure I was a group 7 rider when I was last competing but reading the blurb on BD I'm now considered a group 8. Its fine as its suits me for competing Tarquin but wasn't sure if I go that right. Will have to go back and count how many points I got competing Murphy.
 
If you have more than 14 points at elementary you are a group 6, and if you have more than 14 at novice you are a group 7, and if you have less than this a group 8. i was assuming you had already competed and gained points at elementary level.
 
laafet - as Tempi says, BD have now introduced a "buffer zone" of 14 points at the next highest level before you need to move up a group.

However, if you were previously Group 7 that means you won points at Novice. If you have 14 or fewer, you will need to apply to BD to go back to Group 8 - it won't happen automatically.

Practically speaking though, there is effectively no difference between Groups 8 & 7 for most things. It comes into play for the Senior Inter Regional - but that's about it.
 
Tempi - thank you for that, i am still a group 6 rider as we haven't scored more than 14 pts at Medium yet, but i would still need to compete in open section for Prelim? And no qualifications for area or regional finals?

Is that the same for Novice as well?

Thanks Tempi, just been to check my records and we got a few points at Elementary and have altogether less than 14 points in total. Will give them a ring before I renew to check out my situation. Murphy is now half through his Novice points with his para rider and trainer and they are competing him at Medium level next month. Although I can see that as it is the level at which I get points with him that matters so thats ok.
