I’m looking at joining BD next year and my quest seems to be a great way to start and can also be done on a club membership. Does anyone have any experience with it - are the shows run the same as BD/ are regionals easy enough to qualify for?

Hoping for a fun dressage experience but as I have to hire transport every time I want the offering to be worth it!

I went straight to full membership but local centre does quest and it seems great. You get points for your scores. Scores and points accumulate. Your best 5 scores count if you do more than 5. The top 20 in each class (u21/open) qualify for the regionals.

classes run and judged as bd although judges seem to be a bit kinder (having written for some). Tack rules apply but you don’t have to wear jackets. Teams are encouraged to wear matching clothes but you can wear full comp gear too. It is very friendly and encouraging. Also it starts at intro.

To add

From the regionals you qualify for the finals. It is usually top 2 or 3 in each section that go through.

And another add. The bd website keeps lists of the leaderboards for each class and each region. So you can keep track of where you are in leaderboard and how many are in yo it region. Some regions don’t have the full 20 entries so even one result will get you to the regionals. The finals are this weekend and the process starts again in January.

I did My Quest a couple of years ago. Very friendly and encouraging.
My only quibble was the qualifying bit.
It’s not like BD where you go out, get your points and you know you’ve qualified.
I found that I was in the qualifying section of the scoreboard, then the next week the board would update and I’d drop off the bottom, so if you want to make sure you qualify you need to keep an eye on the boards and be prepared to go out again (and hope to do a good test) to maintain your position.
I did qualify for the regional comp, and I would have qualified for the national champs but it was cancelled due to Covid that year ?

I would class myself as expert level as off to National Champs this week. I did it as I have poor health right now so wasn’t sure what I would be able to manage eventing wise and thought it might keep me going with a competition aim.

I actually only did the bare minimum to get qualified but the horse gets decent % so that helped. I would choose my venues and judges carefully, if there is a judge which is stingy marking then I wouldn’t go as you need generous %. I like the idea that it’s about improving your scores but I started late to the game in June so had to get Q in 2 months and it ended up being a bit stressful to be in top 20. I was doing tests on the last day of qualifying after being in hospital.

I was arguing with the judge at one venue about things and she only gave me 66% for that test so that was a complete waste of an outing as was never going to be good enough!!

The regionals were fine, and quite fun and now I will be off to Nationals. I was going to stop at Regionals but somehow qualified for both classes so thought why not. It is costing a small fortune though.

I am not your normal TQ person, but I see friends and so have enjoyed it. I already had Club membership for BD as went to Combined Training Champs. I was considering upgrading but I already have BE and BS membership which have barely been used this year so just stuck with the club membership. I now have a little ex racer so will do some quest on him as it will be ideal for him but I am done chasing championships now.

I was part of a team that went to the nationals the year before covid. Had a fantastic time and well worth it for me.

As LEC says chasing the unknown qualifying scores is a bit annoying. Did TQ again this year and we were lying 12th before the last weekend, then knocked down to 16th so no regionals for us.

However, its a really cheap was to go out with BD membership wise. You can also use your club membership to do normal prelim classes and combined training and only need to upgrade if you want to go to the pet plans after you have your sheets.

Would recommend as a great way to start.
