.......the main arena will have a simultaneous scoring system so the judges’ marks will appear on an electronic scoreboard after each movement...

So does this mean you will see your mark straight away after your test then? And when you halt at the end you'l be able to see the marks given for your halt? Obviously the rest of the time you'l be concentrating on riding and not looking at he board!!

That seems like a lot of technology to go wrong to me

Oh, great, and about time too!

They've done it for years at Burghley so why not here? It'll make for very interesting viewing.

As you say, riders should be so focused that they won't be distracted, however sometimes you can hear the judge's marks if they are at a table and then I feel like giving them a 'look' if it wasn't what I though it should be!!!!!

like you said they have managed to do it for other events, so why not for the Nationals.

At Sparsholt the judges 'hut' is right up to the edge of the indoor, so if you have to halt at 'c' you are about 50cm away from the judge, i find that off putting!!!!! And you can hear what they are saying aswell

Will make interesting viewing, i cant wait now

Oh blimey!!!! That will make great entertainment...!!! No more crossed out "I gave you 7" opps.. no I think "6"!!! etc..!!! Will each Judge see the others marks too??? This will be very very interesting... at the Regionals one Judge had me wayyyyyyyyyyyway down the list but the other two had me first???.... Yep, Bannanaman I heard one Judge at the Winters... and yes, I rode past thinking... I dont think so you stingy bugger!!! tehe!!! I did ride a bit more after that remark though!!!

what a brilliant idea
grin.gif
as i love watching this scoring a badders.
Didn't realise you have would have time to scoreboard in test whilst riding your boy

I thought you have to look out fo noisey photographers!!!!

definitely a step forwards i think , they've had this for years at badminton and burghley. I think scores can still be changed before the confimed total is given but it makes thing much more interesting for spectators. And makes the judging more "visable " which can only be a good thing.

I would think it will be like Hickstead this summer..the marks go up about one movement or so behind the test...it makes it really interesting as you can see if your right in thinking that one movement on the other rein was better/worse etc..think the riders sre too focused to take notice anyway and it always says they are the unconfirmed scores..just hope the blooming weather picks up ..I like my watching with sun and wine glass..not sure It will be soo much fun with mug of tea and a brolly
grin.gif

unconfirmed means the judge has a few mins still to change his mind on them ! Only when the judge has seen the completed sheet and put his comments and signed it do they become confirmed.

I think it will be really cool! But i am in firm agreement with FREESTYLER, how can it be unconfirmed
confused.gif
, unless of course it is to change a 7 to an 8 in which case - i can't see a problem with it.......... lol
grin.gif

But do you think the other judges could be influenced by one another? Mister/missus list one judge at C gives x for a movement, they are a highly regarded judge, could they be wrong? I'm sure the whole thing will go smoothly with every competitor and judge seeing eye to eye, oh no, hang on it's dressage after all
tongue.gif

Freestyler, i was really annoyed the other day as i went to an Area Festival and got approx 55% and 65% for the same test (2 judges and basically both at C (although it says C and M) - they were pretty much sat next to each other)
shocked.gif
, so my average was rubbish! Just going off the higher score i would of been 2nd or 3rd so was a bit peeved!
ETA - i bet it is even more annoying at the regionals
mad.gif
!!

Samgirl, it can be disheartening eh??!!! My thoughts now are that if at the end of the day my horse is improving and we are learning then that is all that matters!!! ......ummm well... maybe!!!

What about if all our tests were videod and then judged after???!!! tehe!!! ... maybe not... imagine how much it would cost to enter!! I suppose for the time being we have to trust our instincts that we are improving and take on board comments made, video the test ourselves and critic with others for their comments too.... I suppose at the end of the day we should be happy that we have a sound horse that we can ride and compete... but sometimes a competitive edge does take over!!!

Computer input scores are "unconfirmed" as the people who input the scores are only human, and occasionally press the wrong button.

At all events - up to and including the Olympics - the scores are never confirmed until the actual paper score sheet has been checked.

As for the computer scoring at the Nationals, it is only for a limited number of major classes that take place in the Blue Waters Arena - PSG/Int I and GP.

Troi, you seem to know a lot about BD and the rules etc.!!! Are you connected in anyway!!!! go on .... you can tell us!!! Or am I being cheeky and barking up the wrong tree!!!

I saw this system used at the hartpury cdi, and thought then what a great idea it was.
I also thought it improved the sport for spectators, as it is easier for people to understand whats going on, what is being marked and what warrents good/poor marks

Totally agree with Matt. Brilliant idea and really helps spectators to get involved in the sport and to follow exactly each movement as it happens. Incidentally it also highlights the extreme discrepancies that sometimes occur between judges - one judge giving a five for a movement for which another judge gave an eight, as I saw at Hickstead!

Thats a great idea. In driving the judges hold up the number you get for each mark and the stewards write it down on the other side. You get you score as you leave but only et general comments, not for each movement. It will be great for the spectators as it can be abit dull!

Judges? Only Human?

I'm only joking, I agree and I really think it's good idea!

Freestyler - if I told you who I was I wouldn't be anonymous any more.

Just trust that I know what I'm talking about.

The problem with running simultaneous scoring at the Nationals to date is that - up to recently - all the systems have been wired ones - and you can't run wires at Stoneleigh. Otherwise the Hickstead system could have been used as that has been tried and tested for a number of years. The system that will be used (not the same as at Hartpury) is wireless and, as I said before, will only run on the Blue Waters Arena.

In theory the display of the scores should be positioned so the judges can't see. In practice that is difficult - but hopefully they will all be too busy concentrating on the horse to see what marks are going up on the big screen.

ahh what a shame.. not quite PSG I am going for... although I wish!!! Why cant they do it for lower levels too... surely this would encourage riders... (or discourage as the case may be!) their training for higher levels??? Surely lower levels should be the ones who are guided in the right direction... also it would help up and coming dressage people who are watching to understand the basics and where they should be at that stage and if their training is along the same lines??? As an amateur it would be a very good learning curve for me???!!

It's more to do with making best use of the equipment.

It can only run on one of the two arenas - so the logical one to pick is the Blue Waters. The PSG and Int I are the two largest classes of the show, so again logical to pick them. The Grand Prix is also a logical (I'm starting to sound like Mr Spock now!) one to chose on the Saturday, and the afternoon Int I Freestyle wouldn't benefit from simul scores as you can't score anything in a freestyle until the end when the judge decides the final mark. On the Sunday it will be run on the Medium Restricted - so nearer the recreational rider's level.

However, for the rider to learn, I would recommend that you get a radio and listen in to the commentary. It's always informative and usually entertaining as well. Just looking at scores won't necessarily educate - especially if the judges differ. Of course, the combination of simul scores and commentary could be extremely informative.

Finally, this is the first year that simul scoring has been tried at the Nationals. The big screen was introduceded last year and was deemed a sufficient success to warrant the cost. So the next step was to try the scoring. Better to start relatively small, get a feel for how it works and expand, than leap in with both feet and end up sinking.

On which topic, please will everyone send a plea to the weather gods not to send a monsoon this year!

Troi, I see that is logical!!! so, having never competed there before, do they comment on everyone as they are doing the test then???I did not know that either!! That is very good too, who does the commentary? Another Judge? Can you buy a video there too of your test? I ask these questions as you seen very "up" on everthing!!! Thanks!!!
grin.gif

The commentary team is made up of judges and riders and they try to get one of each as a pair for each session. It is always informative and sometimes highly entertaining, dependng on who is paired with whom. They sit in front of the Blue Waters arena, so mostly talk about the tests going on in there.

I think Hoofpics video was there last year (or maybe Peter Waters, can't remember) - not sure if either are coming this year or not. Problem for video companies these days is so many people have their own that it is difficult for them to cover their costs. There will be an on site photographer there though, so you'll be able to get your moments of glory recorded.

I think it sounds like a great idea. It will make spectating a lot more educational, especially as you can see the individual marks for each movement in each test!
