How many Novice points can you have before you are not allowed to compete Prelim?

If you have that number with one horse, does that mean you cannot ride Prelim with another horse?

37 points I think
As long as you remain a group 7/8 rider you can compete in prelim on another horse. Currently a group 7 rider is one that hasn't won any elem points, this changes soon and will allow you some elem points (I'm sure someone can say when it comes in and how many elem points you will be allowed)

At the mo it's 37, as of 1st Dec it will be 49 (i think, or around there). You can ride at Prelim as long as you are a group 7 or 8 rider, ie not have points at elem or higher... until 1st Dec, when you can have 14 points at the higher level before your rider group changes.

there is a new 12 point 'buffer' zone coming into place from 1st december, so you can get 12 points at the level above before having to ride Open in the level below (if you see what i mean) Also the points limits are increasing by 50 at each level - not sure if this is the case for prelim aswell tho, i cant remember!

Points "belong" to horses and riders in different way.

Horses
There is an upper limit for each level that applies to a horse, regardless of who is riding it or who originaly earned the points for that horse. Currently for Prelim it is 37, from 1 Dec it will be 49. Novice is currently 74 and goes up to 124 on 1 Dec.

Riders
Points that a rider earns determine which group a rider belongs to and therefore whether that person rides in the Open or Restricted section at each level. Points can be earned on any horse

To be eligible to ride in Prelim qualifier , a rider must be either Group 8 - never to have won any points at all, or Group 7 - won points at Novice.

Currently a Group 7 rider would become Group 6 and therefore out of Prelim on earning their first point at Elementary. From 1 Dec the 14 point buffer zone kicks in ("well corrected" Tempi!

) and a rider can earn a maximum of 14 points at the next level - in this case Elementary - before having to upgrade their Group.

Therefore, it is the combination of horse points and rider points that matter when considering eligibilty. A Group 8 rider who has never earned any points still couldn't ride a horse with 50 points in Prelim as the horse would not be eligible. Conversely, a rider who has 20 point at Elementary could not ride a horse with no points in Prelim qualifiers as the rider would not be eligible.
