Hi Guys.
I've posted this on the BD forum, but I thought I'd post it here as well and this forum gets a bit more traffic.... :D
Today I finally bit the bullet and entered 2 prelim classes on a class ticket at my local venue.
I asked if I would qualify for any prize money and they told me they don't pay out on tickets. Subsequestly I came 1st and 2nd, class sizes were 5 and 2 respectively. Prize money was stated, no min class size mentioned, but I can understand they may only pay out on 1st place for small classes....
I've just looked up the BD rules and it says prize money is paid out on class tickets. So am I due some prize money?
If I'm not, I'm struggling to see why I would pay £32 a class, when I can enter unaffiliated there with the same judges for £15 a class.....
Before I query it with the venue I would like your imput, just incase I've missed something in the rule book.
Many thanks, TT

I think you should be given prize money? I have copied this from the BD website:

What are class tickets?
By buying a class ticket for £7, you can enter one British Dressage class without being a member or having a registered horse. You can use class tickets to compete and will be eligible to win rosettes and prize money, but will not receive BD points or qualification, except for Area Festivals and Combined Training Championships. If a rider using a class ticket wins a qualifier other than those specified above, qualification will pass to the next eligible competitor. You can buy a class ticket in our Online shop and you will be sent an entry form and an issue of British Dressage magazine, which lists all the current show schedules. These are also available in the competition section of this website. You will need to pay the usual entry fee and abide by our rules.

You should have had prize money for the 5 entrant class, but at organiser's discretion for the 2 entry class

5. Class tickets
British Dressage members on non‐registered horses and non‐members on registered or
non‐registered horses can purchase class tickets at £7 each. Each ticket will enable them
to enter one affiliated class. They must pay the entry fees and abide by the British
Dressage Rule Book. Class tickets may be used at any level provided the rider is eligible
to compete in the class entered.

Those riding on a class ticket are eligible to win prize money and rosettes but will not be
able to earn grading points or qualify for Championships other than Area Festivals.

42. Prize money
Prize money is mandatory, except for Freestyle to Music and Para Equestrian Dressage
classes. The number of prizes given and the amount of prize money, or type of prize if in
kind, must be stated in the Schedule and is unrestricted. Once stated, this can only be
reduced in the event of entries falling below the minimum scale as shown in the below
table. Organisers are free to exceed the minimum scale if they wish to do so.

1st place 5 – 8 entries
2nd place 9 – 12 entries
3rd place 13 – 16 entries
4th place At the organisers discretion

Hmm I saw that... The prize for winning was £50 so a decent amount of money.... Wonder if they were getting confused with bsja.....
Just want to be sure, as they're my local centre.....

Thanks Sagittarius, the minimum numbers is really helpful.

There were 5 entries, with 1 withdrawal, but no entry fee was refunded, so I guess that still counts, so therefore prize money for 1st place is due?

So I should be due the prize money for 1st place, is that correct?

Thanks guys for your help as always... ;)

If they had 4 starters I expect you won't get prize money.

Dud you buy class tickets? Didn't think you needed to for prelim?

Oh god this is getting really confusing, I just presumed you needed class tickets to enter and BD classes full stop.
Just looked at the rules again and apparently you just need them for qualifiers, which both my classes were, not sure what benefit that is to me though.... Think if I get another sheet I then qualify for an area festival, but not sure if I have to be a full member to take part in AF..... Arrrrgh!

So even though they had 5 entries, as they had only 4 starters, no prize money would have been due..... Seems a bit unfair, as the entry fees were still paid....

Don't know the answer but £32 for a prelim stressage class!?! I thought £15 unaffiliated was bad enough.

Eventing is cheap in comparison ;)

Tell me about it!

Think maybe I'll just go for the eventers BD membership over the winter and otherwise stick to U/A. Although if I had been a member today depending on class size I'd have won £50 and that more then I've ever won BE...!

I have thankfully had a fantastic trainer who answers all my questions!.You and the horse do need to be fully registered if you decide to go to the Area Festival-the same with if you get your required points for Prelim Qualification-you need to be fully registered to compete at the Regionals. As for Prize Money, sadly unless you are at the larger venues where you get more competitors the likelihood of you getting prize money is slim. Prize money is given in regard to the actual number of starters, not the number entered.
To be honest if you are more wanting the prize money rather than the points/sheets to get qualification for AF's/Regionals then you may be better to stick to Unaffiliated-although round by us the Unaffiliated does not give prize money very often either! Hope this helps,Good Luck.

Hi thanks for the reply fusspot. Not partic hunting for prize money, but its very nice to get it! :). Just trying to understand BD's system. BS and BE seems so much simpler in comparison....

Yes BD is very confusing, which is why thankfully my trainer answers most of my questions!.I would ring or email BD and get clarification on the Class Tickets-they are very good and do reply by email quickly whenever I have emailed them. There is no point spending out on Class tickets if you don't need to!. Once you get into the BD it does get slightly less confusing!. Re the prize money I think they will just withhold any money where they can. I have to say £32 is very expensive-our big centres are only £20 a class and they do give prize money to 4th and other prizes too!.

Hi fp, this is quite a big show centre with a stated £50 first prize, so it would be very nice to have.... £32 is inc the £7 class ticket... Have got 2 horses that I event, so pure dressage is not my primary aim. Want to compete again there in 2 weeks time and if I take 2 horses and do 4 classes, the difference between BD and u/a is huge, some chance of prize money would certainly soften the blow...! Have emailed BD, so will await their reply. :)

Hi TT

You are due your prize money as it is entries not starters - I should have copied over the line below the table with the numbers which says -

"Entries are as per the number of horses stated on the published times."

Up to you, but it it were me I'd get in touch and quote that rule 42 at them and ask for your money. You can download a copy of the BD Rule Book from the BD website, so can copy the whole thing rather more accurately than I did.
