So, Having been out of dressage (and riding) since the new rules came in to effect I'm a little out of touch but think I understand. please correct if I'm mistaken.
Aiming for Regionals quals for prelim......
I have to be in silver group.
Test only get points if 66% or more? I have a feeling this went up from 65% under old rules?
20 points required for qualification to regionals (think it was 19).
I could still do petplan Novice and Prelim Regionals but not other way round.
Have to be full member to get points for regionals or can I be associate until I want to actually do the regionals?
I can ride silver prelim and bronze novice?
So many changes for my old brain to assimilate :(

Yep, also has to be Q'ing tests too (ones with the Q next to them in the schedule).

You can do Summer Regionals at Prelim and Novice Area Festivals, you must ride at a higher level at the Area Festivals if you go to Summer Regionals. You can do Prelim/Novice Area Festivals this year and then do Winter Regionals at the same level as Winters count as next year.

Only around 9 novice points. Loads of baby prelim points but don't think that matters.
When do summer quals finish and winters start for regionals?

SJ is so much simpler ;)
 
You can remain in Novice bronze until you get 15+ points at Elementary so you're fine there.

Qualifying dates for Summers runs 01 Dec - 18 June
Winters runs 19 June - 30 Nov

Oh I don't know about that SJ schedules blew my mind when I debated about affiliating Topaz :eek3:!
 
Or Area Festivals at two levels and you could still go on to do Winters too?

Have you caught up on the Area Festival changes, two rounds now so you qualify as before but have to come top ten at the AF to get to the second round and then qualify there for Hartpury.
 
I've been doing BD for two years now and all that still makes me go cross-eyed! I'm quite good at navigating the rule book but I feel really sorry for anyone just starting out in affiliated dressage :O

hehe! I could probably dig out one from the old days when you had to win 2 qualifiers to go through to regionals, IIRC that was about 50 pages long :p ;)

I'm a year or so off affiliating I think, but the more I read threads like these, the more I'm put off. I have an MA qualification and my brain still will not take in this information, I swear when I look at it my brain crosses it's arms, turns it's back on me and just says 'nope'.
 
I think the best approach is to keep your own records of your scores/points, and then look at the damn rules each time you enter a show. Plus do a little dance to the dressage gods while you pray that you're in the right section.

Don't let it put you off S1, especially at the beginning of your BD journey it's hard to go wrong. It's really once you've been at least part way up the ladder and want to start again on another horse that it gets really complicated :p
 
I was going to say just stick at prelim and all is simple but am I right in thinking there is something in the rules that prevents this?
You can tell I have exceedingly high goals.

Ditto MP - it's actually very easy to begin with as you'll be eligible for the 'Bronze' section for all levels, which allows you to qualify for the PetPlan Area Festivals.

If you start to get good scores you can think about doing the 'Silver' section as that allows you to qualify for Regionals, which are at a higher standard and a tad more intimidating - I did Regionals at Prelim last year and CDJ followed me into the secretary's office when I went to check scores! Great experience though.

It's only once you start to collect points at higher levels that you begin to lose eligibility for bronze sections. Hopefully by then some of the jargon will make a little more sense..! Also I find fellow competitors are very helpful and friendly, and the BD office are great if you call them up with basic questions. Don't be put off by the ridiculous rule book!

You can stay at Prelim for as long as you like!! If you start getting good scores at championships you may need to move up to the Silver / Gold section but you can spend your entire career in Prelim....it would probably appeal to people who enjoy watching paint dry as the Prelim tests do get pretty dull after a while ;) (and before anyone gets offended, I've just done Areas at Prelim!).

lol!

if you only ever did prelim bronze, you can keep going until you get placed in the top 3 at the AF finals.

If you get to the Nationals or Winter Championships at Prelim (so silver or gold) I think this puts you out of Prelim bronze.

As a combination:
If you score over 68% (70% for music) at regionals then you cannot then do AF's in the future.

If you come top 3 in silver AF Champs (final at hartpury) then you cannot do prelim AF again.

If you come top 3 Winter Champs/ Nationals at silver you cannot stay in silver for Prelim and must move to gold.

Also a top 3 placing at AF final in prelim bronze will out you as a combination out of bronze.

Oh god I'm panicking now after reading this.... I've qualified for Prelim summer regionals, which was my goal, and I'd never considered AF (my trainer doesn't think they're the real deal!) but I got an email to say I'd qualified (still at Prelim) and so I thought I may as well do one. Does that mean I now can't do the regional...?

Sorry yes, BD have been very clear you cannot do AF and Summer Regionals at the same level :(. AF must be at a higher level e.g. Novice.
