Im planning to register my horse and I for BD in the New Year. However, I wanted to do a couple of BD prelims before then (mainly to convince myself we're doing the right thing!) but do I need a reg. number or anything to enter? Also I think I've got it right that I will have to be in Open section?

You don't need to register or buy tickets for Prelim (only) You can enter in the open section as a non member & you are eligible for prize money & rosettes. Good luck

I did a few prelims before registering is its a great way to establish where you fall in the markings and helps you decide whether to take the plunge.

You will be in the open section and may find yourself among some pretty established riders on their young horses. Some of them can be pretty smart, some wild too

, however the same judge does both the open and restricted class (if they are split) so you can see where you would have come in the restricted.

Good luck

By the way - ignore all those who say your marks drop in in affiliated. Its nonsense - mine went up by several %

it's not nonsense. it does happen to a lot of people and at least if you're expecting it then it's a big bonus if your marks go up, instead of down. otherwise you get a big let-down and feel rubbish when your marks go down.

The reason I said that was because of all the well meaning people who told me that your marks drop considerably when you compete affiliated so you need to be scoring off the scale in unaffiliated before you even think about affiliated.

Perhaps because the places I competed unaffiliated were recognised affiliated competitions centres the competitons were similar therefore my marks did not dip.

However saying that I do feel that untrained unaffiliated judges are more readily swayed by a flashy horse with good conformation whereas affiliated judges are more led by the scales of training.

I'm beginning to think this may be a north/south divide thing. Certainly around here the marks seems to drop by around 5% for everyone I know. But a few on this forum have said the same as you and they all seemed to be more nothern?

Just a theory!!

I'll make a mental note not to venture too far south then

- odd though because one of my judges at the weekend was from Bedfordshire.

Perhaps its all that Yorkshire Pudding we feed them
