BD Prize money

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the increasing number of venues not offering prize money for BD classes now?

I can quite understand when the entries are very low but the two largest venues nearby have stopped offering prize money now. Even the Grand Prix with an entry fee of £22 has only rosettes on offer.

Strangely, the smaller venues where entries tend to be lower, have prize money on offer.

I can remember being quite excited when first competing affiliated and actually winning my entry fee back! Sad I know, but it was a novelty then!

Unless we vote with our feet I guess nothing will change but with limited access to venues that isn't always a viable option if we want to continue competing regularly.
 
i've not had prize money a couple of times when i should have

however i was under the impression that the BD rules state the minimum scales for prize money dependant on no of entrants, however i notice that it doesn't stae how much? maybe that is the getout?
 
I wondered why I hadn't got the prize money as usual the last couple of times I was out with Lou! That's such a shame, it feels like an achievement to have done well enough to win money back.
 
I guess we must be quite lucky down south as all the venues i compete at offer prize money. 1st place is always the entry fee (no more) and then it goes down from that obviously.
 
I agree, ones of our local ones doesn't even offer rosettes after 3rd place unless there are about 20 in the class. I mean come on how much does a rosette cost to buy in bulk?!

It really puts me off going as to get a ribbon is still quite an achievement, its such a shame!
 
Its not good, I don't mind getting a voucher if its for a venue I go to a lot anyway but like you say its so dam expensive to get there it's good to try win the entry fee back. Aren't BD making a new rule that venues have to give prize money? I'm sure I read that somewhere
 
Thats a shame, I haven't been out BD for a couple of years now but when I did it was the only discipline that I seemed to cover the best part of my entry fees with.

even tho they state on the form prize money is allocated.

I think it's Rule 40 that states prize money and rosettes must be allocated as laid down in the schedule. So if it says there is some you should get it.

I've just had a quick look through the current BD mag again and there are loads of venues now doing the same, not just in my area.
 
i have only done BD twice and on both occassions i have won my entry fee back...altough not much over my entry fee but the gave money out to 3rd overall in each class.
 
See this is what annoys me. I won and was overall winner but didnt win any money

I guess Im just use to paying out (when i was eventing) and not getting anything back.

However, now Ive seen it on the schedules I may actually say something if it happens next time.
 
As a BSJA'er I find it quite extraordinary that you don't get any prize money ! Even when you do it sounds like you are happy to get your entry fee back...which isn't actually winning anything at all

BSJA...for all their deficiencies...do rigorously enforce minimum levels of prize money in ALL their classes and stipulate to what ratio of starters the prizes are paid down to. You can never win a prize that is less than your entry fee and usually first prize is between 2 and 3 times the entry fee....more the higher up the ladder you get.

I'm afraid voting with your feet will have little effect...and it will require BD to define the rules, and enforce them for anything to change.
 
I seems to happen in fits and starts here at the moment, one venue appears to as and when they want (class No are always low so that doesn't effect it). And another has stopped except for the HM BDQ's.

It a shame really, its so expensive for us all to do and its not like we're demanding huge fees we're all happy with entery fees back for a win

I hate it when venues give out vouchers, especially if its for their own shop.

Last year I won over £100 in prize money, this year I havent recieved a penny

Venues are also only giving out the minimum amount of rosettes possible too. Ive been second in a few classes and not even come home with a rosette.

Blue Barn is good as at the higher levels we get £30 1st prize for a £17 entry plus lovely rozzies.

Speedgate gives you £17 1st prize for a £15 entry and the winner of each section (ie open and restricted) both get a £10 Speedgate voucher as well.

I will not compete at Oldencraig or Cobham Manor anymore as they do not give prize money.

Hopefully BD will change the rules next year to make it complusory to give money rather than vouchers.
 
I think BD need to state in the rules that there should be one money prize for every x amount of starters - preferably with the first prize being more than the entry fee. It seems at the moment they are changing so many things they are forgetting the 90% (or whatever the percentage is) of the rank and file members who are their bread and butter and shifting more towards the upper 10%

With trailblazers type events getting more popular I am wondering how long it wil be before the weekend type competitors start to decamp and stop renewing their membership
