BD report - the alternative PSG....

My girl is on the Pegasus health no moody no which is te Angus stuff.
She will fight you to the end if she doesn't want to do it, mainly getting her bottom under her! This stuff has changed her so much! She has always a tart but now she ignores & really knuckles down: like he enjoys it now ;)

You could have written that about mine!

I'm also away to google this :D

His bum really does look huge now. He's still so clearly going in the right direction and you now have a plan for if it happens again, so I will look forward to your next PSG report :)

I do agree with Tempi and sounds like your mare, Jenni_, is very like mine - she will try her heart out for you 95 per cent of the time - the other five per cent she is outraged at me asking her to do stuff like trot a 20m circle!! I didn't start giving it to her early enough this year (usually only give it when she's in season) and she had a mega tantrum on a hack and pee'd off home with me - that hasn't happened in years.

Precisely! She's been going superbly for a few weeks to the point I've been very emotional about how hard she's trying- and yesterday we got to the dressage and she warmed up for about ten minutes lovely and then another 2 horses dared to come into the warm up and she just coiled up underneath me and just wouldn't... do anything. Tests were horrid and she fought the contact the whole time. Owner came down to help me warm up for the last class and we got some superb work out of her working on 10m circles and asking her to step out and she eventually started working... but switched off completely in the 10 second walk to the test. She's so opinionated and sensitive... and I'm not one for ramming supplements down throats but if this would just help in that other 5% where she just doesn't WANT to do anything. It was like sitting on a ticking timebomb yesterday and the whole day was a write off :(

That's just like J, who is a huge trier virtually all of the time. It's cheap enough to be worth a trial anyway. I know how vile and miserable hormones can make me, so I cannot blame her!

I think the talented ones will always be quirky - it's what gives them their sparkle in the ring. (In any discipline not just dressage)

You do well to sit it, I think it all looked a bit baby baby, which I can totally see why but I agree I think when he says make me you need to mean it when you say yes, even when he says f off you need to stick to your guns.

I know it's practically what you did but What's he like if you forget the movement for a sec, really canter him forward and then give him a proper smack whilst he's cantering (so he can't go up)?

Obviously a lot easier said than done and I know you are working really hard at this, I'm honestly not trying to criticise, and I do realise it is 10x easier to sit behind a screen and say this!

On another note - what make are his ears? (The veil lol)

PS - Bloss is on it and she suffers from ulcers, no effects at all and as it stops her stressing and being hormonal its more beneficial to ulcer sufferers IMO

ears are Kingsland :)

if i can get him really forward he's fine, if i smack him he might buck but will generally shoot forward. The issue is that if i carry a whip and smack him, as soon as i put the whip down he will run backwards kicking then stand up like this. Its like he holds that grudge. I cannot carry a whip at regionals etc so its not an option to just carry it all the time. If he isnt *quite* forward enough in the split second i go to smack him he'll whip round and go up. The whip has no long term effect and it almost works better if i smack him with the end of the reins as he doesnt know where it came from! he respects me more if i push the envelope without a whip and will come out of that more genuinely in front of me.

tempi-thanks, thats great, will go and order.

He's absolutely lovely! :) It's like he just has an 'I want to break free' moment.

I don't know what you're worried about, I'm always getting comments about needing to be more up hill - you can't get much more up hill than that!

PS you can really sit a rear!!! Everytime I see him rear my jaw drops to the ground! You have major guts - kudos!

I've never ridden to this level (or anywhere near it) but for what it's worth it looked to me like the canter was the issue (as others have mentioned, but this was my thought when seeing the vidoe before reading the thread - honest!). He looks much stronger overall, much happier in his work, much less tense so you have done a great job with him, but I think the quality of the canter is not quite there for the work required in a test and he throws in the towel when he has to struggle. I think in time he will get there and he's already a huge credit to your training!

Blimey, he really means that. You deal with him very, very well. I am a rubbish dressage rider (but used to hot TBs) and I reckon that trot looks hot as hell. I'm not surprised you didn't want to ask for much canter ;)

His trot was so, threatening almost. Not in a nasty way, but just in the way you could tell he was ready to down tools if you pushed him more than he felt like giving. He looks amazing, despite the 'toys out of pram' moment- it was a real "I'm stamping my feet and gnashing my teeth and you'd better be scared!" thing!

He looks so well, slobbermash is clearly his favourite :D

Bloody hell, that's quite a rear. Does he do that often? Can't say I have a guts to sit on a horse like that so all credit to you.
I would just say trot and canter need more lift, not faster just more powerful, and he slows down a lot in the piris but I'm aware he wasn't making your life easy. Horses!
Out of interest how old is he? Maybe he's just finding it too hard at the moment and needs to strengthen up.

He looks fab and obviously feeling well ;)
I loooove his extended trot! Were you on track to get your best score before he threw his towel in?

Ah I see what you mean. It's interesting how they are all so different.

I think it's pure naughty tantrum with that leg pawing so I'm sure once you find your way through kt you'll be sailing onwards!

Thanks for the ears comment :)

Well when he's not being a twit he looks lovely. You were up his neck and clinging on sharp - don't think my reactions are ever that good!

Oh dear, what a sod! I had an ISH just like him, snap, bang, vertical rear, leap, buck. Very classy when you are in TH&Ts! At least my dude had the jumping phases to redeem himself

Absolutely no advice, I think you are doing a splendid job with him. He's still so young still, maybe when he hits double figures he will mature a bit?

I don't write much on here but just out of curiosity, is he sharp from your leg or behind your leg but sharp in his mind/spooky if you see what I mean?
Does he do this at home or only when he's out?
I liked the test, his changes looked smooth and fluent, his half passes not bad at all, shoulder in good and canter is well balanced.
8 yrs old? You've done a cracking job there my dear, keep it up

His natural inclination is to be behind me and nappy, but at home after a wake up he's very light and quick and a nice easy ride. At shows he can bubble over, so then over reacts to the leg but by leaping, then goes up, so a mixture and he can drop behind you quick as a snake!
Thank you, he got a real mixed bag of 5/6/7's up until we retired, the tense bits got dinged but she liked his circles, walk and the bit of canter she saw! The canter is usually solid 7's so i would guesstimate a 61/62 sort of mark if he had done his usual work. The si and HP in the test were a bit brittle.

I do agree the piri work could be stronger but equally I cannot set him up perfectly every time because I'm only human and sometimes, he could just help me out, or at least not mug me off! I don't mind if the piris are only ever a 6 because I think trying to really push them could break him, I just don't want to have to ride them on eggshells.lolo has him spot on, he does threaten, in a ver subtle way.

Ninja- this is his go to, if something isn't right, he goes straight up, always has and I guess may well always do so.

Thank you all, I rode him tonight with a gel poll guard, on the curb chain( instead of his usual gel curb guard which is just a smidge shorter) and the odd animal really likes that! It's barely any diff but according to him, it's amazing, oddball!

Do you have any test riding clinics in your area? Only a thought that you could do a few tests away from home but with the knowledge that you can push him through the difficult moments without needing to retire.

On the subject of preparing for the pirouettes, I interpreted at a clinic by someone who has placed at the WC finals and she said that in PSG, she would always think leg yield the last couple of strides before the pirouette (so very subtle leg yield to the right before a left piri). It really worked for the horses in the clinic and best of all, really hard for the judges to spot! Maybe worth a try.

We do have some test clinics but al on a mon, and I really struggle with enough annual leave for everything, however work have just given us 2 bonus half days so I can use those :) as agree it will do him good!

Like the idea of the leg yield , will try that thank you :)

Ugh tell me about it! Work really does get in the way, huh?!

I nearly ended up missing out on Trailblazer finals because work almost didn't let me have the time off...managed to call in a few favours and get some things changed around so I can now go!
