Have just been looking at my BD rule book and I think I am now a group 7 rider rather than group 8 as I have got 15 points at Novice.

What difference does this actually make? I thought maybe it would mean I have to do Open sections of Prelim but it seems not  so wondered what the difference was between the 2 groups?

I would have thought there would be a half way house somewhere as I'm Gp 6 and have to do open Prelim and Nov but rest. Ele. Otherwise it's a big jump from gp. 7 to gp. 6.

You see going by rule 5 I would say I have to do Open Prelims now
"restricted section riders may gain 14 points at the next higher level before having to ride in the open section at the level below"
So I have 15 points at Novice.

However rule 22 Preliminary classes state the restricted/ qualifying section is restricted to group 7 & 8 riders riding horses with no more than 49 points

In which case what is the difference between a 7 and a 8?

I am a currently a group 7 rider, having won more than 14 points at Novice. I compete in Restricted sections in both Prelim and Novice. However when my horse gets more than 49 points, he cannot do Prelim any more and if I get 14 points in Elementary, then I cannot do Prelim either (open OR restricted). I also then have to compete in the Open section in Novice classes. Also, if you qualify for regionals, you cannot upgrade as a rider before the close of entries for that qualifier, although as I understand it, the horse can still compete even if they have subsequently gained futher points. Phew!! It's a minefield, but the ladies at BD are very helpful if you are in doubt :)

BD are shut now for the holidays I believe.
So does anyone know if there is anything a group 8 rider is eligible for that a group 7 isn't? I am sure there must be something - or they wouldn't have the 2 groups - but at the moment I cannot work out any differences at all!!
