Am quite new to BD so am desperately trying to work out how to qualify for the regional competitions

I understand that you need to enter Qualifying classes to have a chance of entering, and that you need a certain amount of points - but am stuck on how to get these points! Is it worked out on % or placing??

For Novice I'd need 19 points, and on the table it says minimum 65% - what does that mean? is each % over 65 a point? confused :(

And it states that I'd need 10 qualifying points, is that 10 out of the 19? Does that mean I don't need to always enter qualifier classes?

HELP please :)

OK, assuming you're trying to qualify at Novice Restricted?

For every Novice test you ride and sccore over 60% you get awarded points - 60-61.99% 1 point, 62-63.99% 2 points, 64-65.99% 3 points, 66-67.99% 4 points etc. etc. up to a maximum of 7 points for tests over 72%

For points for qualifying for regionals you can only count points earned in tests scoring >65%, but you can count all points scored in those tests. So if you go out today and do a Novice test and score 65.2% you will have 3 points towards your Regional total; if you score 64.8% you will earn 3 points , but not be able to count them towards your Regional qualification as your test did not achieve the required qualifying standard of 65%.

Some tests are listed in the schedule as WQ or SQ (winter or summer qualifier). You must get 10 of your qualifying points from these classes. The other 9 can come from any BD Novice test.

Clear as mud?

It is very complicated - recently joined for first time and did take a long time to get head around it.

Horse went in at novice open due to rider grouping and it is so frustrating to get two 66.9 somethings and just miss the 67% he needs (OP it is 65% for restricted, so hopefully not confusing with the 67% for open!). However a miss is a good as a mile and it is still a reasonable score but grrrr.

Good luck with your BDing.

Novice Open is THE hardest level to do. If you rider can do Elem Rest (not sure what group he/she is) I'd crack on and move up to that instead. I think that one's 64%

Sorry to go away from point of original post but agree re open novice - rider accumulated points quite a few years ago and has done very little competing since but I think she is open elementary as well. I can see why she should be open as she does ride really well but she has never done lots of competing and now only competes my horse so has done 12 tests this year on one horse so we are not really big time! Not complaining though as doing BD had never entered my mind until this year so all a bonus.

Thanks so much!! Think I get it.. its all a bit confusing! My horse has been injured all year so will probably try for the summer regionals next year :)

Also, are the regional finals long arena tests? (and are the area festivals??) Thanks :)

Yes, area festivals and regionals all long arena tests. you can't do both in one year. So if you aim for Regionals next year you can't do area festivals at the same level.
