Well it couldnt have got worse really.

First test, Elem 50. Left rein canter was canter, buck, canter, buck, canter, buck ........ you get the impression.

Second test, Elem 43. Trot, stop dead, rear, run back, rear, run back, rear again. Nap, Nap again. Canter was, tail swish buck, tail swish buck...... hmmmm!!!

Surprised judge didnt actually eliminate him in second test.

I know Gen can be a stroppy git and is finding Elem work really hard but today has made me think thats its just not worth bothering with. Why work my @rse off, spend a fortune and live on a shoestring so he can be a git and embarrise us. Trouble is when he does get in the right frame of mind he gets excellent marks. He just seems to be having a real head block about it all.

Dont know if I want to scream or cry right at the mo.

sounds to me like a back problem, or saddle or teeth........

If hes having a 'head block' take him out and do some unaffliated prelim and novice HC to get him going again.

Hi P_G. Everything checked. I thought it was a teeth problem as he does have a very sensitive mouth after an accident when he was young.

It really is a head issue.

I was thinking of maybe doing clinics instead of actually competing to see if he can get over it.

Bloody horses!!! They are a bit like men, can't live with em can't live without them!!

I told him I was going to give him to Janet Street-Porter lol. She would get LOTS of steaks off him.

Out again on Sat. Gonna give him one more chance before we change tactic.

P_G: Not sure if we are doing Burrows Court now (surprisingly). Just seen your post in Pictures and sorry I didnt reply. Burrows Court is weird cos it looks scruffy but the schools are lovely and the people are really nice as well. Been a couple of times but its a way for us and a bit of a poo journey.

Oh I am sorry to hear that, maybe he is getting bored and stuffy. Can he go and have some fun, go on fast hacks, XC schooling or something?

I hack him out twice a week already so I dont think its that. Im not taking him XC cos hes a pratt and im a chicken lol.

Im pretty certain its a head thing. He needs to convince himself he can do it and its not that difficult. If only I could talk to him... he'd get a lecture like the kids get.

Bad PONY

I would have said back, but youve covered that.

Then I would go for brain, he obviously feels its too much like hard work.

All i can suggest is keep working away, but perhaps really work on his strengths and dont dwell too long on his weakness's
Perhaps have a word with your trainer?

BTW Burrows Court bred Winston

their Stallion *Roeview Pride* is winstons sire

Don't give up! My trainer warned me that when I upped the game with Louis and started doing harder work with him that we may reach a plateau and I shouldn't be disappointed. It is all a case of building up the strength and stamina etc. I went through this phase with Louis and had a couple of months of him finding things a bit tough, throwing strops and getting worked up. I've been careful to build up the work slowley and introduce things when and if he feels strong enough. I spent a few weeks just working on simple exercises to get him stronger over his back/hind to cope with more lateral work and the collections/extensions. He's coming through it now and it's really clicking, he feels much stronger and in therefore finding the work much easier and we are having less arguement and strops!

Maybe take it down a gear for a while and just work on strengthening him up at home. Also maybe get a second opinion on his back just to be sure.

Hi

Sorry to hear he is not being his usual self.

Mikes other half was in contact with me about clinics on my yard. If you message me your email address I can send you a flyer, we have one on 28th with Dan Greenwood and there are still places- might be just what he needs

Thanks Katiejaye, you are right, its def. an issue of finding the work harder. I know Mike will go away and think of what needs to be done to try and sort this out. Was also thinking of getting a Bowen lady out to give him a once over as well ... just to be sure.

Hiya DressageChick, thanks. I know Marie said she looked at doing a clinic at your place. Will pm you my email addy. I think it would be helpful.

Ooooh BB - I love their Stallion. Like I told P_G the ppl there are lovely. Its a shame its just a long way for us to go more regularly.

Thanks DressageChick, Could you let me have her details please.

Alibabe: Been thinking of doing some for a while but the logistics are a bit difficult.

Hiya Folora

Just to make you feel better, I am having some sticky moments with my boy now too...I think it is a confusion thing with him and unsure of what I want... he too is throwing his toys out of the pram and doing a lovely reinback round the school!! Bugger!!! I have had his saddle checked out etc... and I videod him too to assess it. I had this rearing and rein back a little at first when I got him a year ago, but that was because I think I did not know what I was doing!! and totally confused him!! Have you been incorporating different exercises that he found difficult? It began with my boy when I started doing lateral movements a week or two ago and also rein back. I have gone back to basics for a while now to see what happens and then come back into other movements slowly..

Hiya Freestyler, sorry to hear you are hitting a few barriers with your boy as well. Im sure its one of those going up a level things.

I often talk to Mike about Gen's training so I can understand whats going on (or at least try to). Mike has said that Gen has problems with his straightness as he is naturally crooked. Mike has to work really hard on this and I therefore think that Gen is finding the collection and lateral work really difficult. Gen is a nappy git as well and when he then finds something hard work he tends to use his nappiness to protest about the work.

Mike hit a big wall a little while ago when we introduced the double and he has since had to re-think what he has been doing and change things. Mike is very good at analysing and changing methods when necessary and I have absolute faith in his ability to get Gen over this. Its just VERY VERY frustrating in the meantime!!!!

They are competing on Saturday again so Mike has given Gen the day off today to try and chill a bit. Lets hope it works.

I know it can be very frustrating... believe me!!! You think you are getting somewhere.. all is going great then you ask a little more and BAM! Brakes on... cant do this...wont do this...!!! Yep you have to analye, re-assess and try another method... I am sure Mike will sort Gen out
wink.gif
...it will be worth it in the end he is such a loverly expressive horse!

Good luck for Sat .. let us know how you get on!
