Well after our pants outing at Hunters last week where the judge really slated Gen (even though he didnt do anything wrong - she consistently marks him down grrrr) we were not particularly looking forward to today. He has also had some mouth issues he is just getting over (infected tooth root!) and a change of bit last week seems to have made a huge difference. His training in the week had gradually got better.
Gen seemed quite excited to be out somewhere different and was a little on his toes but managed to keep his head and didnt spook.
So third time out at Elem.
First test was Elem 41. He made a couple of mistakes and Mike calmly corrected him. His trot work was extravagant but needed to be more consistent and tbh he didnt really get going in the medium. The rest of the test was reasonable and the marks and comments were honest and true. Robert Pickles was the judge and made some good constructive criticism at the bottom. Didnt come anywhere but was still really pleased with him.
2nd test was Elem 48. Fairly tough test. Gen was pretty tired and so was a bit less extravagant but still did some lovely canter work (although he did a flying change in medium canter, then changed back 2 strides later!!). Again marked pretty honest and true with good comments. I didnt really agree with the free-walk one as it said he needed to overtrack more and tbh he is a cob and WAS overtracking well. In fact we all thought his free-walk was good but we often get this comment. I think judges dont realise that its different for a cob than it is for a warmblood.
Anyway he won his section (R) in the second class which was a nice bonus.
Gen def. needs to be a bit more consistent with his bigger trot now but he isnt yet 7 and so still needs to muscle up more and learn to 'sit' all the time. He also needs to gain a little more balance so that he can do the BIG trot a little slower. It will come with time and work and then the % will go up. Im really pleased with the way he is going and improving.
Its hard for a cob in a warmblood world.
