so, my mums horse is usually in the top ten of his section BE PN and has won all unaff prelim he has been in (only about 5 and the standard is v. poor around us) so if he did BD would he do well??

Why dont you try a Prelim test at an affiliated event? Horse and rider dont have to be registered with BD to do this! Might be worth it to gauge how he does!

Technically the judging should be the same

Sounds like he is doing well and as Ovidius suggests - try the open prelim section at BD

People I know who do both BE and BD and who do very well at BE dont tend to get such high scores in BD. That doesnt mean to say your mums horse wont do well in both though - its just that the standard is higher in pure BD - but do bear in mind that a lot of pure BD horses would be awful in BE!

Rog has done well BD and is capable of doing very well in a BE test provided the xc can't be seen from his arena! lol
Technically the judging should be the same... but its not... its all relative to the standard on the day. BD comments are never as complimentary as the BE comments. I guess because my pone is a hothead little TB who is usually event fit and doesn't look quite as nice compared to the more powerful WB'y types, but mine still kicks a*se ..occasionally

Sienna always does better with a higher listed judge who is involved with BD. BD judge is more likely to be looking for a correct, relaxed, submissive & rythmic horse - all of which S generally is - working at the appropriate level.
BE we get marked down as she has a short stride - (she is short!) and doesn't really do swinging through the back, usually by a list 6 judge who has become stupified by all the rangy, overbent 17hh event horses and can't actually tell whether S is a horse or someone's labrador which has escaped from the carpark.

My view - go do BD, much more rewarding judging & not neccesarily harder, just more correct.

I do BD and BE. I normally get 66% - 70% in prelim at BD and around 65% in novice. I have done 3 intros and got 35 at first one 27 at second one and 42 at third one! The third one he did a lovely test and 42 is equivalent to 58%!! So i dont know what went wrong there, think the judge was getting tired or fed up.

We have scored up to 72% at BD prelim and Novice, with up to List 4 judges, we're placed every time at affiliated dressage and have had the odd win, the most recent a novice qualifier. I find the higher up the lists the judge, the better and more consistent our marks - but that's besides the point. However, at BE intro and PN our best mark has been 35.something and it's usually in late 30's low 40's. Now all this doesn't add up to me, and I find the marks at lower level BE far worse than BD. Can anyone make sense of this? But, in answer to the original poster, I think you'd be fine and would be quite succesful.

I think it's for two reasons. Firstly the judges aren't neccesarily of the same quality at BE - it's more a case of who they can get hold of.... (sadly) Secondly I think at BD the judge is looking for a horse which is working appropiately for the level. So it does not need to be working uphill or showing great engagement at Prelim/Novice. At BE you get such a mixed bag, there are people on horses working at well above that level, competing at Intro.

I have a similar experience to S_V

We have never set the world on fire with BE dressage (best is around 36! and usually 39-42) but in BD we've got about 30 points at novice and elementary, lots and lots of placing and scores up to 70% with highly regarded judges. It's a phenomenon I really don't understand.... especially as every now and then, it's the same judge at BE and BD and we'll always get the higher mark in pure dressage, despite him being a slightly lumpy irish thing???
