Would appreciate advice/opinions from advanced BE riders! My horse has now qualified for CIC3* and has done 3 2*'s clear XC plus intermediate clears. I'd planned to run him Intermediate at Eridge and then give him a couple of weekends off before Aston LW Advanced. What is ALW Advanced track like? It's meant to be a good 1st Advanced run but peoples opinions vary. Plan after that is Gatcombe Advanced then Hartpury CIC3*, again what are these tracks like. My horse is push-button XC at 2* & I've ridden at 3* level for many years but have just come to the UK this season.

You should be fine with that plan, the second two will both be very well presented, lots to look at, but I'm sure you will be fine. Your horse will need to be fit for Gatcombe.

The track at aston rode really well last year and you know they will have lovely ground.
Gatcombe is on the big side and you'll need a properly fit horse!
Can't help you wiyh the last one as had to withdraw both mine last year

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. No problem on the fitness front.
Depending on the performance at Hartpury - would you be aiming for Blenheim or Boekelo as a first CCI3* as I'd like this horse to have done a CCI3* before the end of the season?

I've not done Boekelo, but Blenheim is just superb. Excellent prize money, atmosphere, course etc, and depending on how long a season your horse has had could be better for him as I think I'm right in saying that Boekelo falls a few weeks later. How exciting!

He's been running right from the start of the season but had quite a few two/three week 'breaks' - he's now got three weekends off including this weekend (seeing as Eridge cancelled) before Advanced at ALW. I've not had the chance to walk Blenheim before and there isn't much on their website. Has been bold and clear XC at 3 recent 2*'s, SJ's not a problem - will easily jump 140 course, dressage is improving and going in the right direction according to trainer (Yogi B). My biggest concern is that this horse is a 'young' 9 year old (Born mid-Dec!) and started off this season in novice (only started PN eventing last June!) but has serious talent and has qualified for Adv/CIC3* thru the FEI route as opposed to BE points. Before Blenheim he will have had 4 Advanced runs inc Hartpury CIC3*. I just don't want his first CCI3* to be a borderline 4* course! I'm aiming to do the 3* World Cup runs next season and would hope to be ok for Burghley 08.

my trainer did Blenheim last year and said it was a very meaty 3* according to her she was chatting to WFP who said he thought it was a 3.5* her plan was always to do 4* this year so entered Blenheim to give her an idea of what to expect.

ditto!!!

Advanced person, seriously jealous... and yogi knows what hes talking about! have you asked him what he reckons to blenheim etc? hes very helpful like that?

Yes he is seriously talented and YB has told me that he will go 4* next season and thinks he's ready for Advanced/3*. I've not been in a position with my previous Advanced horses to go from OPN/N to 3* in one season and my concerns are that although he is consistently clear xc at 2* level he is very low mileage and will have limited Advanced experience prior to Blenheim (ALW/Gat/Hartpury 3*/Brockenhurst). Although Boekelo is 10/14 October he will only have the opportunity for one additional advanced run at Witton Castle which I understand is an 'easier' advanced course anyway.
I don't ride for GB and my national fed are very keen for him to run at Blenheim and have already submitted a nomination which has been accepted by the FEI pending a qualifying result from Hartpury.
Maybe I'm being overcautious (not like me!) but this horse has come such a long way in such a short time and has total trust in me - he'd jump off a cliff if I asked him hence I don't want to let him down and break his trust by asking too much too soon. Does the course in general change much from one year to the next at Blenheim - maybe I could get a video to see how it rides???

Not qualified for this thread (!!) but can say that last year's Blenheim track was similar to the European Championships there in 2005, but there may be big changes this year as Eric Winter has taken over from Mike Etherington-Smith as designer.
