Okay, so my attempt at alliteration is pretty pathetic, but I have progress from my first BE event (where I got blacklisted :( )
So booked a lesson with a BE accredited coach, around Toomer Farm xc course. Warmed up over a few small fences where Clare taught me some great techniques at how to get him going nicely before and after the fence without charging around like a bad ginger bomb!
So jumped a few jumps feeling pretty confident (maybe too confident!) Got to the top of the hill and thought "oh cr*p! I don't have enough power to get over the jump" Which happened to be a rather big and wide hedge with a large ditch *4ft wide* in front of it.
Pony puts all 4 feet into large ditch, does a rather spectacular flip, and lands on the other side on the hedge lying down next to me! Poor boy, totally my fault. :(
After a quick check over and trot up, he was fine and I hopped back on to do the sequence of jumps again, didn't ride like a muppet this time and my totally genuine dude of a pony jumped out of his skin to clear it! Bless his little cottons!
So finished the day over some more jumps and came away from it thinking how much I didn't know, which I don't know whether is a good thing or a bad thing?
So hoping to enter Pontispool BE90 so that I can show BE that I can do a nice calm round and give pony confidence again before I move back up to BE100.

Another thing that my instructor said, was that I should sell my thoroughbred and buy a warmblood as my legs are weak and they would really benefit from having a horse which is rather more stuffy than my usual forward going, no leg needed horses!

So, final point on this ridiculously long, pointless post. Does anyone know of, or where I can find a reasonally cheap warmblood (Less than £5000) to event!

Thank you and sorry for the pointlessness!

What a load of old cobblers saying that you need a warmblood to get stronger legs. Go cycling if needs be!

Oh dear re fall, what did the trainer say? Doesn't seem to have scared himself though as he jumped through it again perfectly! Good luck re Pontispool, write a nice report!

Can't really see your instructors thinking i.e buying a warmblood to strengthen your legs. As rotters13 said, go cycling.... much cheaper :D

Yeah she said something about children should go from ponies, to warmbloods then thoroughbreds. I said to her that I was thinking about selling her anyway, and she just suggested getting a warmblood. I don't really understand why though :/

echo the cycling comment. Also come meet my WB, put your leg on (very gently) and she goes, if she is meant to be dead to the leg I daren't ever ride a TB again ;)

And I will see you at Pontispool as I'm entered in the intro :D (on my dumblood ;) :p :D )

Quite shocked and aghast at your instructors comment re selling your horse and I'm rather surprised that you should then decide to sell your horse just like that! :( It takes hard work and training to make a partnership it doesnt always happen immediately.
Would perhaps go and get some regular consistent training and see if that helps the stituation and get the two of you working together?
It sounds as thou your chap is very genuine and wants to do the job which is worth everything :)

FYI most of my thoroughbreds have been far stuffier and slower/deader than the various warmbloods I've had!!

echo the fact that the comment about warmbloods needing more leg is most definatley not always the case. Yes they may not be naturally as fast, but IME they are much easier to train, and are very responsive horses when trained correctly. I know TBs can be aswell, but on the whole i have found WB types much more responsive to the aids.

Regarding all your comments about instructor and warmbloods, I am sure it wasn't due to the fact that it will strengthen my legs (maybe I made it sound wrong) but I think it is the fact that she thinks my riding will benefit more from eventing a warmblood, this was after I said that I was selling my tb!!
Sorry if I confused you all!

Why on earth would your riding benifit from riding a wb than a tb?!

WBs can be sharp/lazy as well as a tb...

You can't expect to go out and win on a new horse, gotta build up a partnership with the horse :)

Perhaps what your instructor meant was that moving from a pony to a tb is quite a big jump and you would infact be more comfortable with a native pony x tb? A "hot blood" tb crossed with a "cold blood" pony = warm blood.

What a bizarre thing for the instructor to advise?!

Fwiw I believe the best sort of first horse is a nice tb x native- my first horse was tb x connemara and he went 2*, had a spare 5th leg when I needed helping out and was a perfect schoolmaster, though he didnt have much experience himself when I got him.

my warmblood moves with barely a twitch of my toe let alone a kick! my TB I had before him was a lot less "reactive" and he was certainly no slouch.Don't write off the TB yet. Just do some squats and lunges or somethinbg. Cycling is good idea!

I think I'd be looking for a better instructor instead of a new horse!
What utter ****.
It's nothing to do with having strong legs, it's what you do with them and how forward to the aids off your leg the horse is, not it's breeding.
Riding forward going horses is an art and it takes time. My daughter still insists the best fun ever was riding her very fizzy little mare over huge XC courses, so find someone who understands how to help you not suggests changing horses..
Although the instructor may be accreditted, there are some who are better than others, so shop around. By the sounds of things you are SW area so go and see Caroline Creighton, she'll sort you and your horse out..

that made me giggle- sorry. but just because you get a WB doesn't mean you will become a bettter rider.
reminds me of the dressage performance supplement, it promised that my horse would become amazing at dressage. yeh as if.
I don't quite see her thinking behind it, surely you should find a horse that suits you and your needs?
Instructors always say i have good upper body strength which comes from good lower leg strength... i cycle silly amounts! so get cycling! :D works a treat.
glad pony is ok after the fall.

If you really want to strengthen your legs you could do what Christopher Bartle made me do and ride a bike with no seat!
