On 1st January 2023 riding hat standards are changing/updating. They are the same as what BSJA changed them to this year.

I have a Gatehouse HS1, I bought it in a shop so no online order history. Where on earth does it say the standard?? Can’t find anything in the liner. Am I just being really daft!

British Eventing, Pony Club and British Riding Club hat standards 2023
  • British and European: PAS 015 (2011) and VG1, all with BSI Kitemark
  • American: ASTM F1163: 2004a onwards with SEI mark, Snell E2016
  • Australia and New Zealand: AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards with SAI Global mark

I wear a Gatehouse HS1. On older hats the standard was under the flap of padding that goes round the hat. But on my current hat they are stamped on the label inside the crown.

These HS1 hats have always been a pain at RSs which want to see the kitemark and basic standard on a client's hat. My regular RS made a note it was Snell. But I once went and had a lesson from a friend who taught at a different RS and was told by the owner that I wore my own hat at my own risk.

I had a look under the lining (around the head band I suppose) but it’s not removable and there was nothing there.

From 1st January 2023, the following hat standards will no longer be accepted, due to the age of hats made to these standards:
1. PAS O15 1998
2. SNELL 2001
A new colour of hat tag will be required for BE, PC and BRC from 1st January 2023.
The PAS 015 2011 and SNELL 2016 will continue to be accepted.

OP, you need to establish which Snell std yours is.

fuzzy I know ? I don’t know how to do that!! Help! I can’t find anything in the liner and the label doesn’t have any useful numbers on?
I can’t check for an order number because I bought it in a shop.

It's quite hidden but it will be there. The label you can see does not have the info you need. Most likely you are looking under the liner which comes away easily from around the edge of the hat. The label is under the lining in the middle of the hat, the piece of material which has the label you can see on it. It's under there.

Label is stuck to the shell of the hat about 2 inches to the left of the visible label as you look at it in your photo. Peel back the edge lining. You can then peel up the middle one, it might be a little stuck but be firmer with it!!

Yes quite, it's almost like you are pulling the hat apart to see it. I know from experience that BRC will inspect every hat though so you do have to find it. My hat was OK but my partners is not so definitely need to check. Good luck with yours!!

I am the BRC hat checker ?. In gatehouse hats they can be found on that middle label, or on the inside under the liner or as an attached label. They do the whole range.

not on middle label
Not on the liner around the hat band
Not on a label

it’s been checked at BE hat check so they must have lifted it up to check right up in the middle. Ffs I thought it was well stuck down!!c

I have an HS1 and I’m pretty sure after a complete panic I found it in the middle under the liner but I had to pull the whole liner out to find it.

I’m pretty sure most of the new HS1’s are compliant so hopefully yours will be ok.

If you have been hat checking this year you can use the visible label to see that it meets the snell standard as both versions are valid. Next year only one of the 2 standards will be valid as they have obsoleted the old one. Hats made to either standard have identical visible labels and can only be determined if it was tested to the old or new standard by looking under the liner. Next year if you are hat checking you may well have to start peeling apart HS1 hats, or get the owner to do it as the liner does on first inspection seem to be stuck down.

On mine (bought new last March) you need to lift the edge of the black fabric liner and the Snell 2016 notice is big and clear to one side. Not in the centre of the crown.
