Sigh. I've complained most of the winter that my cob wasn't fit and that I didn't have enough time..and it was horrible weather..and..and...and...

So got off my bum 6 weeks ago because have Riding club camp coming up in early April so knew he needed to be super fit to be able to do everything. Have the YO'ers daughter riding him twice a week for me and I'm doing 4 times so he gets 1 day off. She's been doing fast work with him, lots of trotting on the hills were lucky enough to have and I've done 2 days of schooling and 2 days of long hacks with lots of canter and gallop work.

Saturday...2 hour hack..took me 1 hour 15 minutes!! He trotted most of it, cantered everytime we hit grass and managed a 5 minute gallop through the fields, which for a heavy cob is quiet something!! Got back to the yard, he bogged off with me twice on the lead rope, then tried to join the TB's training in the big fields for racing!!! He stood in his field snorting and stamping because he wanted to be with them!!

Sunday...1 hour schooling, I swear it was 30 minutes of wall of death around the school and he still came out bouncing and ready to go!!!

I'm now starting to dread the camp, how the hell I'm expected to hold on to him during XC because the moment he see's a jump he wants to take it...I wouldn't mind but I'm am a novice jumper, I've hacked out for most of my ridden life (30+ years) and only just started jumping 2 years ago!!! 2 friends have already asked if I don't do the full course could they borrow him cos he is so honest and fun!!! I'm starting to thing I might lend him to a more accomplished rider for the weekend and I'll watch..I'll still learn by watching and not have to be drunk in order to get brave enough to ride!!:D;)

Best bit is the YO'ers daughter who told me he needed to be fit...she said yesterday 'oh I'm not getting my lad too fit he'll be way too much to handle, I'm taking him half fit so he'll be tired'!! Oh great!!!

As long as he's had the roadwork to harden his legs, maybe next time, don't worry about his stamina level!

Bit late now though! Chuck him in the field for a few days!

Would you back off on the work load now? I'm sort of thinking I can work though this initial insane stage and hopefully in 3 weeks when we go he'll have calmed down a bit more? Or should I take some herbal calmer with me...for him not me? I'll have a hip flask for that!!;)

If it were me, i'd turn him out as much as poss and knock feed on the head. Just go back to hacking at a sensible pace. Don't know about calmers, maybe take an Oxyshot with you?

Problem is he needs feed cos the grazing is appauling, but he's on non heating no sugar high fibre diet anyway because he's sugar intolerant. He's turned out for most of the day and night, comes in for a few hours to have hay and feeds. I've got some Feedmark calmer that I use for the dentist, so might pop that in my bag just in case. Think I just have to hold on and hope.

Hold on for dear life :)

You might find that as horsey gets super fit he'll calm down again, as long as the workload stays high :)

Tho I must admit I'm giggling and remembering the post about him appreciating you- serves you right!!! U wanted him fit, she's got him fit :D :D u might as well enjoy it!!!

I adore super fit horses they're a lot o fun :D :D

You'll LOVE camp if he's this bouncy ;)

:D I know!! Bless him I know I'm very lucky he's really a great little horse but I'm terrified I won't be able to keep up with him!! All the others going a 'proper' riders, they are ex-jockeys, RI's, and young bouncy fearless kids!! And me on my hairy chunky monkey but as I said 2 of them have asked to borrow him on the XC because he's so utterly honest he'll give anything a go!!

Think I'll keep up with the work load and be glad I've just had a new body protector fitted. :D
