Be careful who you trust to train your dog

Horrid. Had a nosy at the guy's socials on Sunday before it was all taken down, seemed like a Billy Big Balls type, look at my big fierce dogs being big and fierce. We all know the type.

I doubt there were 15 loose dogs behind him in a car park where he was training box work

From his FB page. I think he means kicker not clicker

or rescue dog

Oh God help them - that short line alone had me seething, what kind of person takes a rescued dog into their home and then hands it over to someone else to train for them? And come to that what kind of rescue agrees to rehome an already damaged and challenged dog to someone who needs to look to use and pay someone else to train the poor thing?

I feel sorry for any dog or puppy that was entrusted to him for training.

This worries me a lot when it comes to dog trainers, I am looking to use one because I've never trained or had a dog before and that kind of trainer is what really concerns me. I was advised to go with an APDT trainer and I've read that many books I feel I have a decent idea on it now. What is wrong with that guy that he thinks that is okay, you should not smack a child and a puppy/dog deserves the same level of understanding. From what I have researched he'll just instill such a deep level of fear in the dog that might become permanently imprinted.

Despite me being a fairly useless dog owner/trainer I now won’t trust anyone with my dog after a well regarded dog trainer choked, flooded and stressed my dog (puppy at the time) relentlessly last year. Then threatened me with legal action if I mentioned their name on social media or tried to get my money back through the courts.

(Quote from their email:”Any slander and perceived defamation of character will be met with the strongest possible response from them (insurers legal department). It is of course a matter for you to decide on the level of caution you exercise.”

This was after I tried to get my money back as I had booked 4 sessions on the basis of them being positive based training which they were absolutely not. They then tore my character to shreds. I didn’t care about the money other than that I didn’t want such a nasty person to profit from what he did to my dog. I’m sure they would say that if I used their methods I wouldn’t be having problems now, but I will never put my dog through that kind of ‘training’ again.

I will always be my dogs advocate from now on and will remove him immediately from any situations that are detrimental to him. I’m ashamed that I allowed the entire training session to proceed but I was suffering with terrible neurological issues and felt I needed expert help with the dog due to his strong chase drive and reactivity to noise (the solution to which is not to run a drill in one hand and hang the dog off a half choke in the other until it quits reacting to the drill...which it never did.) I failed my dog miserably that day, was in floods of tears through the whole session and shake with rage every time I think of that person now. I won’t ever let my dog down like that again, or let myself be cowed by a so-called professional.

BBP, please don't beat yourself up. You went to that trainer in good faith and when you realised he was a cruel bully you stopped going.

You have moved forward positively with your dog and that is all you can do - you can't turn the clock back.

We don't always get the dog we hoped for but we try to help them become the best they can - and this is what you are doing.

Your dog is in the best possible hands - yours.

There is a very popluar gun dog trainer, I can't remember his name, who put a video on Youtube showing him placing a spaniel where he should have stopped by carrying him across the field by his ears. People still recommend him.

ETA I watched the video above and I am sure that dog really learned a lot from that experience. What a FW.

A well known trainer did that with a large audience at The Game Faira few years back
