BE event horses for sale. Is it just me.......?

I'm sure its been that way for years, and as long as some people will pay it - they will continue.

A friend's boss buys horses at ridiculous prices imho - £20k for a 4yo :eek: The horses are not really that special in my mind, my horse has easily the same amount of talent (just less money/lessons thrown at him) and he cost 10x less than her horses. I;m not saying my horse is a mega star by the way, but it really doesn'y take much to get a horse round a PN - most very average horses could do it. :)

Obviously for a horse doing more, I'd expect to pay more :)

I do think that here a so many people out there looking to buy with no real idea what they are looking for. They almost take the price as an indicator of quality and ability. If it costs that much...It must be worth it!!

someone i know --- £50,000 for a 3yr old just backed!! :eek::eek::eek:
its all about the breeding now days.. (so what happens to those with no breeding?? :confused:)

yes a lot of very overpriced horses on there. there is one which on paper is very similar to my horse (obviously could be AMAZING in the flesh)- and its up for 18k. now just off to do an add to sell my horse :p

To be honest unless you've bred a horse and kept it until it's 4 yr old you have no idea of how much it costs. we would sell a foal for at least £4000 and after stud and vet fees and keeping the mare there'snotmuch profit. Add into the equation three years keep and backing it, you would be looking at 6-8K. The trouble is these days people expect to pay rock bottom prices for the perfect horse.
The talented well bred horses are still fetching good money however the value of average horses has dropped. I suppose the people with money aren't affected by the recession so you will still get people paying £20.000 for good young horses.

Yes I agree.

I find it really odd that the tag BE on a horse seems to automatically double or triple the price, even if the horse is distinctly average and only had mediocre results round Intro/PNs.

we looked at one that was 5yrs and by Master Imp and out of a King of Diamonds mare - 10k and all it had done was hunted once and jumped a BS Brit Novice! Funnily enough we knocked them down to £5k!

Mine got reasonable BE record - would get round with reasonable rider on him - cant seem to give him away at the minute, and not overpriced!

I feel your pain! I paid well over five figures for Mini TX's mare, who was six at the time. It did have a very good BE record, had been ridden by two professionals - one is a 4* rider, and it had done very well. It is also a fantastic teenagers horse and has the talent and manners to burn. Oh, its very pretty as well with fab paces, with a nice temperament. We were talking to a lets just say 'well known name' recently and were gob smacked at how much we would get if we sold her now, with BE poitns on her and a pretty good PC record, with a win at the PC Nationals, and I mean gobsmacked in a very nice way. I was told that if it got to the JRN finals at Weston Park (Mini TX's ambition for the year) then the value I was quoted would double. If it got selected for the Junior team, then the sky was the limit.

I have to say I have a friend who has bought a couple of so so eventers for her teenager. Has paid mega bucks for them, and they havent been all that, lets just say. We struck it lucky, we have total pure gold with our mare, and I have to say I think it would take someone waggling a lot of cash at us for us to part with her. As we dont buy babies to bring on, I cant really comment, but I would agree there are some silly prices for horses with BE records.

Our homebred was 2nd in the YEH final last year and a few pros have told us she's worth in excess of £30.000 (she is very special and has won lots of classes, though and not for sale) I also know someone who last autumn bought an eventer for £50.000 and 6 weeks later was offered £100.000 for it, so there is still money about, but averagehorses are cheap as chips!!

just to echo what a PP said about the cost of breeding them, we have a nice rising 3yo, so far he owes us about 15K, we won't be selling him for another couple of years at least, but by then, the costs will have almost doubled again.... but we do it for fun!

Personally I do think anyone who thinks they have a nice youngster they have bred (or 2 in my case), are hanging onto them & not even advertising at the moment as buyers have unrealistic expectations as to how little they can pay for them. Ours are at home, runnning up few bills, so to hang onto them for a while longer is no issue. There is no way I'd sell for silly money just to sell them. I'd like to think the price I am asking is fair, they are beautifully bred, very easy going uncomplicated animals who will make lovely evneters, but in no-way are they up for 5 figures. I don't breed them though to make a loss, I aim to at least break even.
