I already knew Somerford had lost their grassroots slot which is a huge shame, but I’m gutted that Frickley doesn’t feature either! It’s such a great venue.

Glad Stafford has survived though. And Kelsall’s a good event.

I made the mistake of clicking on the BE website, just because BH may be ready to tackle something in 2023.

Oh my word, what a pizza of a website!

I have not found the full fixture list yet!

ETA - OK, found it now. There are few BE 80s, such as no Frickley, Epworth or Bishop Burton. I am surprised.

Only one Stafford? They normally have one early in the season as well I thought. There's nothing in the NW until Eland mid-April (which is more Midlands but never mind!) then there's Eland, Kelsall and Solihull, then Bradwall in quick succession.

Kelsall 2 seems later than normal.

No Tweseldown to kick the season off in March for the south.
But that's due to the gas pipeline (Southampton to London) going straight through the sj /xc start area. If it hadn't been so delayed, it should have been finished by xmas but only just started in that area!

I had wondered why that was off the calendar, not that tweseldown in March is particularly appealing. Shame for the advanced horses though.

Lol, I usually come away from there with sun burn, wind burn, trenchfoot or frostbite! Never the same weather each year, tho there have been some 'nice' weather BE March events ?

Frickley has the international and regional champs. May try and qualify for the 100 regionals there with youngster as it is one of few events where you know the XC will be a proper shake-up!

Shame to have lost Weston from the calendar, but that seemed inevitable.

From a northern perspective I'm happy enough as my 1* aims for the rising 6yo are there at Warwick Hall, Belsay, Blair and poss Osberton looking at it! More of the same for the older horse - probably going to aim for Blair 2* long and maybe Rockingham 2* short, plus Gatcombe festival again.

I saw on FB that it's hopefully just next year that Weston aren't running.

That's good if true & have always wanted to jump around the big spring Weston but just never had the right calendar space!
Ditto!! Just never had quite the right horse that early and wouldn’t go just for a 100.

depending on where you are the Cotswold up (south) or brigante cup (north) are really good UA events
Wouldn't surprise me if there's no brigante cup next year as cholmondeley is running as a GoBE 3DE and Frickley won't be hosting it as they have an international. Although you'll be able I use the GoBE classes exactly as if they were unaff.

Stuart’s email is more depressing than any I have read for a while:

As you will be aware there are several changes to the 2023 calendar. Now that it is published, I felt we should up date you on changes to our events here at team BEDE. As the financial crisis deepens, we all need to ensure that we can provide the best sport that is possible and to manage both our expectations, as to what we can deliver, and those of our competitors. We sadly say goodbye to Aske, it has struggled for a couple of years with entries due to clashes on the calendar. We are very grateful to the Zetland family and estate for over 30 years of support of Eventing.

Firle is another loss to the calendar; it is a sign of the times that we are struggling to provide big estates with the return they require. Firle is a huge wedding and filming location and the return that they derive from a wedding far out ways that which we can offer. Again, this is a loss of a great venue that has supported the sport for over 25 years. However, with the ever increasing demands of these big estates they require rents that we cannot sustain. This is increasingly a difficult decision that we have to make, weighing up our desire to keep these lovely galloping estates, against the need to keep events viable and able to invest in the future.

On a brighter note, we have agreed to help Gardie Grissell run Brightling. Many will remember Brightling from its glory days as a very popular and exciting course. It was sad to lose it off the calendar and we were delighted when Gardie asked us to help bring it back to life. It will add another much-needed event to the South East, and we are keen to keep supporting the sport in this region. We will run 80, 90, 100 and Novice courses and look forward to seeing many of you here.

Another change to the calendar is the move of the Young Horse Championships to Cornbury. Unfortunately, we were unable to compete with the finances of Cornbury and had to say, much against our wishes, goodbye to these classes. We have worked hard to build the profile of the Young Horse Championships and are very proud of the list of Osberton Graduates that have gone on to represent Britain, and other countries, at top level. We can take solace in the fact that we have built these into classes Cornbury felt these were significantly worthy to covert.

We are working to try to ensure that Osberton has a future, however with the loss of the YHC it is very much in the balance. It would be a massive loss to the sport to lose this venue as it has over 60 years of history and has the most suitable ground of any event I have been involved with. I await updates from British Eventing; however the future is really in their hands. If we do not get suitable classes to run this may well be another event that falls to BE changes. Joseph Bell and his family are so very supportive of the event and keen to continue the legacy set up by Michael Foljambe, we will work very hard to ensure that the event has a rosy future. At the moment we are looking to host the final of the Master’s series, offering non FEI riders the chance to compete at an international event with all that this entails, without having to register with the FEI. We also hope to welcome 1* competitors and 2* ponies which should add to the fun. We will keep you posted.

There is no money in eventing which seems odd really as there is huge money in dressage and show jumping. Large estates with long links to eventing/country pursuits did it for love but they can't do that anymore. They need to run their estates sustainably or end up losing them to the NT or to hotel chains or whatever like so many other former estates. So there need to be big name sponsors like there are for SJ who can promote and market it better. It has always seemed to be the poor relation of other equestrian disciplines. Don't really understand why as it is such an exciting sport noth to participate in and to watch.
