And surely the argument is that if you're going to be a member of BE anyway, you might as well use these benefits if they apply to your life. No one is going to join BE to get a fuel discount!
I can see the point about tracking/consumer info (and I have a strongly libertarian streak
) but you don't get something for nothing is this world, generally, so the participating retailers are only going to do it if there is a benefit to them. (Yes, part of the benefit is the potential to encourage people to buy more of their product, but that's offset against the price reduction and, as this thread shows, most people who participate would have bought the product most of the time anyway.) No retailer is just going to give money off a product just because someone is a member of a non-charitable organisation for the heck of it.
