I put the poll up as I graduated last year and am in my first proper job with student debts, a horse to pay for, rent, saving for deposit etc. Would love to BE but its so expensive and the preparation of going to lots of hunter trials, weekly lessons, SJ, dressge comps, transport is a bit much - and I am on a fairly decent wage.
So many young people are doing BE and I just don't know how they find the time/money!!
Still I am aiming for my BE80 at the end of July yay!
i think the costs are ridiculous- i haven't competed BE for about 3 years now as no longer have my older horse and have just had youngsters for a while.
i have a beautiful 3yro gelding bred in the purple for eventing who i bought as a weanling but am seriously doubting whether i have the funds to run him properly next year and beyond.
i am on a decent salary but am only 22 and have a huge mortgage etc to pay on top of all of the horsey costs!
We are running BE this year after a winter of BD as I want to sell the pony this year and (hopefully) a decent affiliated record will add ££££, if he was not for sale we would have carried on unaff tbh.
Like Jumptoit, distance restricts both our BD and BE entries. (old, slow lorry!)
I know how you feel with graduating and not being able to affford BE. Until this season with Soap I have run him on day tickets, and had to enter only a very few events. In addition to trying to compete him I have done a 'project horse' for the last 3 years which sadly meant I couldn't event him at all in 2007. This 'project horse' once sold has helped to buy me a 4x4, pay off student loan and overdraft so now I am debt free.
Taking the time out to produce these other horses was worth the sacrifice as Soap needed time to improve and mature but that's not to say it wasn't heartbreaking at times to have a horse but not the funds to compete.
Without extra funding from parents or a reallly good wage I think it's incredibly tricky for grads to compete regularly BE

Simple - the combined demands of BE and a hefty mortgage mean that I don't eat, don't go out, live on £3 bottles of wine and wear the same clothes that I bought second hand from ebay 5 years ago! Did I mention getting up at 5am to go to a second job before my main one....?

Distance controls my competing more than anything else.

Same here. Being in NE Scotland, Im quite limited as to how many events I can do (with 3 hours travelling being my absolute max generally). The cost does put me off but I still do it anyway
I cant afford BE - its all comes from my student loan!
Really though I am graduating next month and have no idea how i can fund my be'ing as my mum and dad are pulling the plug on horses finances - up till now i pay all be stuff and stuff from saddlery (brushing boots etc) and they pay all running costs.
