Be Nice Headcollar- Yeah or Nay

My elderly companion pony Sugar is a right little b*gger to lead in a conventional headcollar

You get the idea, a cute little pony is capable of tanking off with me whereas my huge W/B toddles politely beside me !
So is the Be Nice as effective as they make out? Or any other ideas are welcome.

I would say yes, but like with any gadget! has to be used corectly because of the poll pressure studs, have you tried just a normal rope halter like the ones that are used to show welshies.
 
They are very good for retraining, although a normal rope halter works well too and is cheaper!

Remember you cannot tie up in a be nice, but they very good for handling big bargy horses.
 
There is an alternative and far cheaper than the special headcollar - its called a Kemp Controller. Basically it's a nylon rope that attatches to any headcollar via clips and it tightens around the nose when the horse barges. Or some people just put the lead-rope round the nose for more control.

I wouldn't mind so much if she was big BUT she's small and to add insult to injury she is also quite old.

Wew just wrap a leadrope round there nose and through the headcollar if there strong seems to work fine for all the bargy cobs where I work
 
When I first had my mare she reared a couple of times on the way out to the field. I put her in a be nice for the next few days, she attempted to rear once but thought better of it. I haven't needed to use it for the past 18 months so it trained her!

I'd try and borrow one if I were you as they are a bit pricey.

Yeah.

My 16.3 highland was terrible for dragging me all over the place. The be nice has put an end to that. I used to put the lead rope around his nose and it didnt have any effect.
 
I've just bought an eskadron headcollar with built in chain. Not had a chance to 'try' it properly as such yet buy my horse seemed to not drag me thru the gate as much tonight so am keeping my fingers crossed. It looks smart too although think going to have to get it adjusted slightly as FS slightly too big buy Cob was a bit small!

Generally a leadrope with a chain at the clip end. Thread the chain through the near side nose ring, over the nose (for a bargy horse or one that rears) or under the chin for one of those dastardly ponies that insists on grabbing every blade of grass, through the offside nose ring and up to the cheekpiece ring. Personally I hate that, when the chain comes into effect it drags the halter into the horses' eye, I loop the chain (I use a dog choke chain) over the nose and clip it underneath, I rarely have to use it at all. Works for a couple of my horses, they only take the mickey when the chain isn't on.

I actually prefer the Dually head collar as a training collar, Hate the lead rope over the nose as it never seems to work with the real bargy ones. Also A dually allows you to train that behaviour out of them so they lead correctly. I have to turn out all the livery horses here in the morning, and I turn out two at a time otherwise I would be at it all morning, and invariably the new horses have not been taught to lead correctly so I keep 3 duallys - one in each size and I use one the first few times I lead out a new one. and within a week they are happily walking alongside another horse on a loose rope. Why is it people don't seem to train their horses in hand so they walk nicely on a loose rope, they all seem to pull, or drag or barge.
 
My strong Haflinger had a monty roberts dually headcollar which worked wonders, we lost it and used a normal one for a few days and he has been really good.

Nay use a kemp controller. It works brilliantly, Its simply and basic design seems like it wont be strong enough but believe me it is. You can buy them so cheap on the products' website. I keep it on my headcollar at all times just in case thats the beauty but do not tie the horse up with it on!!

Anyone using the Dually over the kemp controller is mad!!

The kemp controller costs a fraction of the dually does and it comes in one size to fit all. the dually is very pricey at £30+ and in pony, cob, and full and the Kemp controller is £8.00. I know which one I would have. It works brilliantly and again after the horse has had it on a few times they respect it and walk lovely beside me. Again like you ~I work with horses and yes why don't people train the horses early on and in hand more than they do it would save alot of accidents. I believe we should all take an exam to own horses to some competency like they do in Germany!!!
