BE overhaul

I think it's unecessary and confusing.

What are the heights- sj? Xc?

To me BE 100 means dressage test 100, not blooming 100cm class.

Presumably what theyre also saying is that you can do a training class next year without the training (ie no trainer present so BE 80)

BE board chairman Ally Fox also told H&H last Friday that there will be a £5 discount on rider memberships and horse registrations if they are done online rather than by post.


I think the same should apply to online entries too, rather than the surcharge they impose atm.
 
My main question is, by changing the names etc does this cost more money?

I agree boss totally unnecessary. I also think BE 100 is dressage test 100 not the height of the class.

I also think there should be discount by entering on line.

Bu as name changes i'm confused! Why are the needed? And does it not say trainers are still needed at 80 or T?

Should be good increasing competition days by 6% though.
 
Being the cynical old git that I am, my first reaction was the renaming of training to BE80 now paves the way for the introduction of a new training level. Probably 1'6" with W&T stressage. Intro and PN had to have name changes to hide this.

Guesses on how long there will be trainers available at the BE80's?
 
Well think I most likely won't be doing any next year then.

Will have to stick to BSJA (where you are guaranteed to win prize money in all classes) and unaff ODEs, RC and PC events. Still, at least the bank manager will be my friend

The price increase is bad enough but why oh why change the class names??? AND the dressage test names!!! I'm going to get sooooo confused next year i can tell!
 
i agree, and i can see a "teensy training" class in future too. it's going to be muppet level eventually, anyone for 30cms xc?
i think the class name changes are daft, and confusing... just what they wanted to avoid.
Why couldn't they have Level 1 (Advanced) Level 2 (Intermediate) etc etc, so they could add others on the bottom as and when necessary.
 
I can see the class name changes relate to the heights of the fences (ie 90cm and 1m) so that isn't that confusing but the 10% price hike is A LOT! It's expensive enough to enter as it is. If you are just a amateur and so not do that many and say want to ride on tickets it will take it over £100 a class what with starting fees etc (that's not to mention the fuel and other expenses on top). Then you do not win any prize money at the lower levels whether a member or not - why not??

Prizes in kind is not my idea of a win - I'd like to think I'd got some of my entry money back at the very least!

Shame the BSJA/BE and BD can't all get together and work out say a one off fee for a person to be a member of all of them really. With things getting so much more expensive they will end up making LESS money in the long run cos the joe bloggs' of all of us will revert back to competing at the unaffiliated (cheaper and often just as well run) events.

Don't suppose there's any chance Novice 126 will get lost somewhere and never found again in the great renaming shake-up? Or Int 137 for that matter?

There used to be a bit of achievement involved in competing BE and a bit of kudos attached to doing affilliated eventing. If any old donkey that can jump 70cm can have a go now then what is special about it any more. And before anyone accuses me of being elitist (which they will) I'm all in favour of PN and Intro, but if they keep introducing smaller and smaller classes it will be the death knell for unaffiliated competition, and probably a lot of RC and PC stuff.

Absolutely. In the U.S. they pay one membership fee to cover all disciplines, and you can do a 1 off Life Registration fee for the horse, to cover it for its whole career, in all disciplines. I just checked, for 09, it's $55 for the rider, $200 for life horse registration.

But I am curious - will that make people stop eventing? Or will they event less? So will BE actually make any more money? I do think that if they introduce smaller height classes, that would be a real money earner for them.

A bit of a footnote re. US eventing - yes it does sound like a good deal for $200 for life horse registration. Unfortunately, my US-based friend pointed out that your opportunities to use your registration are significantly smaller than in the UK as you have to travel upwards of 9 hours sometimes to get to an event...
 
Seems to me that eventing is getting more amateurish and other amateur sports such as point to pointing are getting more professional.

One can only think that they are foolish to increase by 10% during a recession.
 
I don't really think though someone who is jumping only 65cm/75cm is going to want to pay the price to compete at an affiliated event when they can pay a damn site less to do an unaffilated competition.

My idea of BE eventing is you compete if you are at least somewhere near confident enough your horse is going to jump round a x-country course.

With aff eventing you know exactly what sort of fences you're likely to come up against at each level. Personally i think intro and PN levels are a good idea. I enjoy eventing but have to say i am not mad or fearless enough to jump a bigger course than a PN (not even done one of those yet either!) but I know what the standard of course etc is going to be and enjoy improving my score at intro. (would be nice to be able to win some cash though!)

Despite us all getting very indignant about the increase, I really cant see it making any difference to the number of starters really.
Given that 60% of membership compete at novice or below and assuming they compete twice a month max then we are talking about £10 per month approx. Annoying? most certainly. Showstopper? probably not.
 
This is really interesting... why didnt this statement come out a few weeks ago - i could have done my diss on this....

I think i had better get a job at xmas to pay for my eventing next year and i need to start applying for a well paid grad job as well!
 
I think i read somewhere that the price increase is because of all the cancellations this year, the abandonment fund can't keep up. It's extremely annoying but i dont think it will stop me going out next season.

The renaming is crazy....why on earth??!!! I'll be interested to find out if they are changing the tests or just the names of them? I wouldn't mind a change tbh, done the intro and PN ones soooooo many times over!!
 
of course as someone said merely renaming everything will cost money, as you will have to completely reprint scoresheets and dressage tests etc etc. great idea if they had used a plan like kerilli suggested so further changes wouldnt need a complete reorganisation.
 
QR: Timefaulter, are you saying 40% of BE's membership compete at Intermediate and Advanced? That sounds a large amount to me!

I will be intrigued to see if BE100 is what it says on the tin, or if it will in fact have different heights for the sj as currently.... For me, I think this will cement the two-tier aspect eventing now has in the UK.
