Been wanting to get out doing BE for ages, assuming i pass trailer test, there is one fairly local to me in August, but I can only use transport on a saturday, and the intro is on a sunday, but PN on saturday.

Will be doing a bit of sj at required height, and xc schooling round a local course that is 3ft. Would I be mad to enter a PN event?

When I first started out as an event groom you had to go straight in a PN. Assuming your horse and you are confident at the height of the fences and your dressage is ok then I can't see why not?

PN is fine as long as you are used to jumping that height etc, they aren't usually tricky at all. i'd practise a few wide-skinnies (you won't usually get anything 3' wide at pn, more 6' wide-ish), and make sure the horse is happy to get his feet wet, pop a little ditch etc etc.
it wasn't that long ago that we had to go straight in at Novice...! if you're confident in your horse's jumping and bravery, then Intro is very small tbh.

You will need to be doing more XC than just 3ft if going PN. BE courses are alot more solid and imposing than alot of unaff stuff. Sjing is 3'3 with 2 fences at 3'6.

XC is 3'3" at PN but there is a 10cm leeway allowed so some fences could be bigger.

To make it worth your money you should be confidently jumping 3'6" schooling including through combinations. XC

Me and my little horse are very happy at 3' and jumped a fair few of the PN fences at MK when schooling there yesterday (the bigger steps, the step up with ditch in front, the PN hedge and a fairly hefty roll-top below the steps) but I wouldn't say that we would be confident entering a PN - will def do an intro this year but I definately would agree with KatB that PN Xc is a LOT more imposing than your average local 3'0 XC course. But if the horse is bold and you are happy over 3'6 (which we aren't!) then no reason not to go in a PN I imagine!!

the local xc course is built properly! The event i was thinking about is draycott house, if that makes any difference!

Yep know Draycott well and ran round the PN a couple of weeks ago. It is meaty but straight forward (relatively!) is your horse good with ditches? Big open ditch caused a few probs in Intro and Pn. Also a large seat to table in the woods is imposing. You need to be schooling round bigger than 3' though, that is intro height.

Could you school round there? Usually pretty obvious which are the PN fences, and might be worth it? I know that having watched a few BE now, only the centres which also run BE (Tweseldown, Snowball and MK that I have been too) give you a true idea of the fences. Eveywhere is so different!! However if you are confident then no reason not to enter!

I know 3ft is intro height... but there isnt anywhere else locally that is any good. could go schooling round draycott i suppose! horsie is fine with ditches.

i went straight in at PN with my boy, and had only done a 2f3 xc before that

but he was fine - if you are happy at 1m jumping then you will be fine.

it all depends on the horse me thinks!

if you have been doing pony club intermediates then you will be fine, as here they are usually more trickier than the affiliated PN

PN is fine as long as you are confident!

I'm probably not a good one to answer this as I started BE at novice level and have worked my way down to Intro

I would have taken Ginger One straight in at PN but fancied having at crack at getting to intro RF next year.

I havent been there, seen the website, fences look good. I really need somewhere that can provide an instructor, as I dont generally have anyone to go with me

Also make sure you're good with corners and lines as they are being put into PN much more now

And starting to make an appearence in Intro

i went straight PN with my 5 yr old at Buckminster and had done some bsja and some xc schooling but masses but i knew he was bold and Intro sj would have been too small for him. Few years ago i went straight in at Novice level but i had been doing open PC eventing previously. all depends on how bold and brave you both are

Draycott i would say isn't that tough, the SJ was tiny when i did it last year.

If it's your first BE i'd say its best to enter intro. Then you can do really well and be confident. If you've evented befor the PN should be OK.
