Hi, I am doing my first 3DE at Aldon next week; any tips/advice would be really useful........

I have ice boots and clay, do I need something like No Bute? Or electrolytes? Or an equine massager?

After the XC should I do anything differently from normal? Normally my horse would go out in the field that night but she will be stabled at Aldon and then have the trot-up and SJ the next day. How much walking should I do? Do you ride before the trot-up?

Thank you very much!:)

Hi, the most important thing after cross country is to make sure you keep the tendons cool and inflamation free, so usually lots of icing/ cold water, walking out in hand for a pick of grass a few times (depending on what your times are will determine how often you can do this though!).
Usually go for a little hack first thing before the trot up to loosen pony up, warm up a little bit before back to stables for tarting up for the trot up!
Would be worth taking some electrolytes depending on how your horse is as a drinker?
Most of all good luck and have loads of fun! I really miss the three day partys although **hopfully** will be back out at them next yr!

I think I will be finished by mid morning so plenty of time for walking out/grazing!
Thank you, I can't wait! :)

personally i wouldn't use clay, i'd stick to ice. clay can mask things and if there's a tiny nick you haven't seen it can be disastrous.
electrolytes are a good idea, if your horse is happy to take them. a bit of apple juice in the water makes it more palatable too, encourages her to drink and rehydrate.
i'd take her out and lead her around a few times through the day. walk out Sunday morning, and as shelbug says, take out for a little hack and loosen her up before the trot-up.
good luck, hope you have a great time!

Really helpful, thank you!

Hiya!

I have requested stabling next door to you so I can do late night haynets/waters/checks etc whilst you are in the luxury of your B&B!!

Will be interested to follow this thread for tips so keep them coming!

Sometimes if horses are fussy drinkers we have in the past given them electrolytes before going to the competition and when we get there to ensure they drink to throughout their time away from home. This was only really for those that were really fussy and all other tricks for getting them to drink failed!
We walked ours out in hand for about 15-20 minutes at a time, the last time being as late as possible before closing the stables, then again as soon as they opened the next morning.
Hope that is some help, lots of good luck vibes coming all the way from Yorkshire! x
