I am planning on taking Jack to the beach this summer (it will be our first time on the beach together - don't know if he's been before) for a good old gallop. I never feel like I can fully let go out on a hack through the woods as there are others to consider (dog walkers and the like) so thought this would be a good place to really let him fly.

Just wondered what others experiences of beach rides were?

One horse I took to the beach loved it and made straight for the water! Was a job to turn him round and get him out of it!

Another one hated it, and was so frightened of the waves, he threw an enormous paddy and I couldn't get him near the sea! This was a normally very brave intermediate eventer!

On both beaches I went to, there were too many people to really gallop. Best to go very early in the morning, I think, before the dog walkers/kite flyers/sand surfers arrive!

Fab! And mine have never been as forward-going as i've expected them to be! Whenever we've taken one for the first time, we've prepared ourselves to be bolted with or bucked off, but it's never ever happened. They've just done as they've been asked and tend to pull themselves up.

They LOVE to be untacked and allowed to have a roll though!

Just watch out for deep sand/sinking sand - we've had a few close encounters with the stuff and it's pretty scary! And depending on the horse, people flying kites/remote-control planes can be quite scary too!

Have fun!

Can you ride on any beach or are there rules about it?

All my experiences with horses on the beach is that they love it. I've also found too with youngsters to go with one that has been before to show them the ropes and not to be frightened but enjoy it.

Where are u in Scotland?

Yeah theres rules about it, I googled horse riding followed by my nearest beach and it gave me the local councils website with a link to there rules for beach riding.

My horse is liveried at a yard in Fife - think they tend to go to Petticur Bay with them. YO is very good at giving advice on tide times and when to go etc plus since I've no transport I'm kinda hoping one of the other liveries will want to go with me.

Cool, we are over the west side so was going to give u some good beaches - but bit of a trek for you! Do you go to Dalkeith to ride on their open days - we often make the journey over its fabulous with all their land o ride on and variety of xc jumps.

Never been to Dalkeith - might do if it seems he likes the beach though. Hoping that him not feeling like I've got a hold all the time will mean that he stops all the yanking
