Hi i was wondering if anyone knows which beaches you can ride on? I live in the new forrest so would like to ride on one not to far if poss. I know you can ride on studland bay but you have to pay for that and was wondering if there where any others. Or where can i find out about it i have tried googleing it but didn't find anything useful (but then i'm not good at that kind of thing

I am asking this at a strange time of year i know but as many of you know Lucy has been diagnosed with a rare illness and although she has been doing well so far she has been having some bleeding episodes again

. On new years day she had some blood in her wee and this morning she had some blood coming out of her right eye. The vet has said don't panic they where suprised she haddn't had any more bleeding till now but noone knows how this illness progresses or how the treatment is ment to work. So i am worried she is getting worse again. Saying that she tanked me down to the field and galloped off when i let her go this morning so i think she is still well in herself thank god. Anyway i have asked the beach question as i have always wanted to ride her on the beach and i always put it off till next summer and now there may not be a next summer

. I will not be able to gallop her along the beach but just to walk her along for 10 - 15 mins would be so lovely as not taking her on the beach would be my only regret

. Thankyou for reading.

I would think Studland is well worth paying for (if you can just ride ad hoc for a one-off fee as opposed to annual permit) as it's a lovely beach, given you won't have so far to travel if you take the cost of fuel into account.

Thankyou for the reply. I have ridden on studland before on a riding holiday and it is lovely. I will pay if i have to but i don't have much money due to Lucys ever growing vet bill (just paying off the back bill is using all my wages). You buy a day permit to ride on the beach and heathland and as i can only walk Lucy for about 10 - 15 mins realy it would be an expensive day out so i was wondering if any beaches where free.

QR - not sure where you are (my geography is PANTS!) but if you are considering Studland, would it be worthwhile going a few extra miles to Weymouth? You'd have to add up the extra fuel against the cost of getting a permit to ride on Studland, but its just an idea!

I absolutely LOVE riding down the beach - ours is not as long (by a long shot!) as Studland, but its safe and not too busy this time of year. The sea is also safe and not deep or steeply banked, bit cold though this time of year

Where abouts in weymouth? Is it near bournmouth? My geog also pants

. It will be cold this time of year, but worth it i can always go back in the summer if Lucys still here. Just don't want to regret not going

Weymouth is further down the coast than Studland - hence the comment about the petrol. I think we're about another 25 miles west? The beach is free and I can pm you places to park if you do decide to go

Yes please pm me places to park. at the mo that seems like the most likely place. I'll talk to the OH later as he will be towing (and prob funding the trip. Not that i've told him that part yet

Do make the effort - I can't help with choice of beach as have only done Holkham myself - but you are right in thinking do it now just in case.

Many years ago I wanted to take my pony to the beach and never got round to it and then he became too ill and that was that. I've always regretted it hence I made the effort to take my horse. Plus some beaches are shut to horses in the summer, so you might only be able to go up until March time.

Sorry to hear Lucy is ill - has the disease got a name? Just curious.

Thankyou llewelyn. Lucy and i have done so much together and i think the beach thing would be my only regret i have ridden lots of other horses on the beach but never her and she loves water so much i have trouble getting her out of rivers. She has Amyloidosis a rare inflamotatry illness. No one knows much about the illness and the vet at Liphook who is a specialist in this sort of thing had never seen it before and gave her a less than 50% chance of servival.
