Hi,

I am dog sitting a 2 yr old beagle at the mo who lives in a family with two young kids. She is very sweet not nasty but is not very well trained. she jumps up all the time and insists on licking everyones face when they sit doen to cuddle here. I cant take her off the lead coz she runs away when she gets a sniff and we have foxes and rabbits etc in are garden lots. I am trying really hard with her and have managed to stop her jumping up on me and stopped her licking my face but she still does it with other people. she is very under stimulated and I got a treat today and taught her to beg, sit, lie down and roll over and she got them all in 2 mins. She cries when I am not in the house (doing the horses) and if I take her with me I have to put her on the lead away from the horses just in case and she cries there too. She has only been here a day so far but I want to try and make her less in your face and her listening to me more. Only have her for a week but I dont want it to be a week from hell! any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

She is a working breed and just needs tons of exercise, if you can take her for walks with you riding a bike the faster pace will help or running if you are fit. I jog with my dogs and they love it. Also if you can get her to fetch/chase can you go to a large enclosed area and hit balls with a tennis racket, it'll go miles and she can knacker herself chasing after them.

We took on a beagle when she was nearly five! We were her third home and I said if she didn't settle with us,I would have her put down - three homes in that time is more than enough for any dog. She will be thirteen in April. I didn't realise just how difficult beagles are. You don't go to dog training classes, you go to beagle training classes! Having had a terrier before, and then ending up with a hound - boy! Huge culture shock! Even now she has issues - a carpet is meant to be wee'd on - thankfully,we don't have any now! Our garden was entirely dog proof - new fencing,6ft all round - until she chewed a beagle sized mousehole in it! If the nose goes down, the ears stop working.Temperament and nature, second to none,so kind and gentle, has mothered litters of kittens, and is never territorial with other dogs, even in "her" house. She used to love following me round the farm on horseback, just had to keep checking she was still with me,and not taking her own line. Also used to love walking XC courses - trouble was, she'd run ahead, latch onto someone else and be halfway round again before we finished. Too old now, just comes for the ride, and stays at the lorry.Well, not quite, she has learned that other lorries mean water buckets and picnic baskets to raid.I don't really know why they are as they are,but I was stunned to see on the internet just how many beagles of around 18-24 months need rehoming. Good Luck! (If you keep her, you'll notice a difference in about five years!!!)

We have a beagle, she's 12 now, had her since a puppy. She's a lovely dog, perfect temperament. We haven't let her off her lead as if she'd get a scent she'd be off. She likes to bury socks etc in the garden. She doesn't jump up but does sit and watch you and make a sort of 'humming' noise hahaa. Best advice with a beagle is to get an extension lead. They can run up and down until the lead runs out and less effort on your part hahaha. Also she enjoyed jumping little makeshift jumps in the garden when she was younger!
Sorry, not very helpful, but we haven't had any trouble with her to be honest. I am quite good at discipline so she respects me but walks all over my mum! Now I've left home she shares Mum's bed!

thanks for psots. Only got her for a week, not mine. Doing really well today. Took her for a walk in the early morn and with the frost she was oicking uo the scents really quick but now starting to understand that when I call her name she should come back. She has nailed stay and has nearly got no jumping up on the rest of my family now too. The old Fluffy Terrier we have isnt too hot on her still, with the consistent bouncing around the house and all over Whin when she is lying down. Should be able to gove her back on sunday with some good skills trained into her. Mayb i should make a job out of it!!! lol. thanks again for posts.
