I really want to get myself a beagler for this season, plus doing BD with T too now so it'd get a fair bit of use and i love them. Obviously would love a Patey but really don't think i can swing that money wise.....

I have found one that Charles Owen do thats just over £100, pics look ok on website but wondered if anyone had one and what it look liked? What is the quality like? I have a Charles Owen shaped head so might be a good one.

Remember someone mentioning another cheapish brand of them on here but cannot remember what it was??

Not sure i can afford it as i have to replace my xc one, been on cards for a while and falling on my head this week in it was final straw

Also as we're buying a house OH is insisting i cut down on non essential horsey spending, very boring

. Sill might be able to sneak it on the credit card.

Ideas/suggestions appreciated

Charles Owen ones are beautiful. Unfortunately they dont fit me!! The Horka are the cheaper ones! I have one, and it does the job, but is nothing amazing

I seem to remember some sort of new rule for BE - something about if the hat comes with a disclaimer that it is not designed for riding then it can't be used. Rules out all except Patey then.

I may , have course have been dreaming about the rule!

I wasn't dreaming - here is the post from the BE forum with a reply from BE

27.12.2008 | 15:43 Hi.. was going to buy a Charles owen beagler (no straps) for the dressage, but saw on the product description that it was suitable for in-hand showing only. I have seen other people wearing them but just wondering if for the dressage they are aloud? Thanks.

28.12.2008 | 19:24 As far as I'm aware it's allowed. I've worn mine from Intro - Int.
Though in the rules for 2009 its seems to look like you can't?

06.01.2009 | 12:28 Dear Member,
Thank you for your enquiry. With regards to the hat in question, you are correct in saying that the manufacturers clearly state that it is not designed or constructed to be worn whilst riding; this also applies to the Beagler Classic.

There are however hats available which look very similar, which are designed to be worn whilst riding and these are acceptable for dressage under BE 2009 rules.

My friend got the charles owen version for xmas and loves it. Personally I dont feel safe without a chin strap so have ordered the CO Hampton which is supposed to be low profile like the beagler but conforms to safety standards and has a nice chin strap!

Haven't noticed a rule as such, but there was a reply from BE on their forum which was words to that effect. Are they really going to check though?

So many people wear beaglers.

Horka, that's it!!! HOw much are those ones? Are they very different in looks to the CO?

Thistle - Ooooo i hadnt heard that. Will check 2009 rules before i buy......I know a few people with non-patey ones who are planning to still wear theirs this season. BE really should tell us about rule changes. Thanks though, will def check

What size do you need as there's a 7 1/2 on ebay for £40 plus postage.

My xc hat is a 2 1/2. What size is that in other sizes??!! Oooooo is it a patey one?

**scurries off to look on ebay**

How annoying re that rule!!!!!!

Loads of people wear them and never seen them checked. Hmmmmm havent got 2009 rule book yet, has anyone? I wonder if new rules are on website, will have a look

I got mine from Hamilton Show wear, she is called Mrs Ogden and is from Manchester, they look exactly like a Patey, and are much much nicer than the Charles Owen beagler, I have two a black and a navy, i think when I got my last one about 8 years ago it was about £140 plus p&p. She is a very obliging lady she sent my first one to Canada, when I was living in hunt service over there. If you need the number pm me but as I say its 8 years since my last one and she made them from home so could well of moved. Sorry cant be more help.

Anyone know the BD rules on them? Can i wear non-patey for that?

[/ QUOTE ]

BD rules just say you have to wear a hat. Doesn't specify what kind of hat, except that some are more protective than others!

My daughter wears my old Lock beagler for BE. It must be older than she is (20)!!! I think this would be really difficult for them to police if they are allowing any of these hats.

There doesn't appear to be anything in BE rules about this, nor in the summary of rule changes for the year...

'3.20 Dress
i. Headwear
Protective headwear must be worn at all times by anyone, except for top hats and uniform hats for dressage in Intermediate and Advanced classes whether or not a Competitor, riding anywhere at or in the vicinity of a BE
Event. If a harness is fitted, it must be correctly fastened.
Protective headwear, as specified in Annex 6 Competitors’ Dress Guidelines in the Handbook, with a visible BE checked symbol (‘hat tag’), must be worn at all times by anyone jumping a horse in the practice areas.
If a hat becomes dislodged during a dressage test, the rider should complete the test before retrieving the hat.'

Lots of people wear CO hats for dressage/showing. There are two styles, the old fashioned and the deep crown version. They are around £110 ish (depending on the colour and where you buy them from ).

Margaret Ogden sells a variety of styles for around the £180 mark and Pateys (again with a variety of styles) for around £400. None of them will be much use if you fall off. I have a Patey top hat, but am considering one of Margaret's hats when I replace my extremely ancient Charles Owner beagler.

I have a Charles Owen and think they are really smart looking. A word of warning tho' when I was fitted for it I couldn't believe how tight it felt on my head and for the first few months I was relieved that I always seem to be running late at events and never have enough time to warm up for dressage, as I couldn't stand having the thing on my head for more than 20 mins!! Now however, 2 years later, the vacuum effect has lessened and I can manage 45mins without feeling my skull is being crushed! Still it looks smart and no pain no gain

It amazes me that beagler hats are still allowed for competitions. Never mind BD or BE, but I am surprised that the insurance companies covering individual venues have not insisted that all riders wear proper hats at all times when mounted. You might as well go without a girth while you are about it!

You could just get a normal hat and cut the straps off with a scalpel...

I have a Charles Owen beagler and wear it for B.E and BD. Never been questioned or anything for riding in it.
I love mine couldn't do without it.

Thanks guys. Think CO might be winning, plus their hats normally fit me.

Think i will have a look in tack shop and see if i can try one one, as they do 2 styles too. Then just the pesky £100 to find.........

I have a Patey & love it.

Was supopse to have one from Margaret Ogdenwent down to her house Manchester (5 yrs ago) got fitted, gave her the cash. 1 year later still no hat.
Lwft numerous phone messages to get one back saying she hadn't started it yet but if desperate she had a blue one half made up.
Erh I specifically said Black is what I need.

Would not touch & barge pole come to mind.

So went to Pateys at Myerscough got one there & then! It did require a little tweaking so met Paul at Bramham & he did it free of charge. What a lovely chap.
