Beagler or harnessed hat for dressage?

Personally there is nothing nicer looking than a smart beagler, nice pair of joddies and a well fitting jacket, especially in dressage where I do think looks are taken in to account. Its like ballet, they dont wear welly boots and a big coat to do that do they!

I know the safety thing is big, but how many people do we still see without hats etc, at least you are wearing something. And if they were that worried, they really would have stopped people wearing them!

I do think they look very neat and smart when riding a test

machannah, if you wear a beagler you may as well be not wearing a hat as a beagler will offer no protection at all in the event of a fall.

Also people check your insurance policies, most of them concider your insurance void if your not wearing a current standard safety hat. Therefore if you fall off and give yourself brain damage it will fall to your poor families to care for you or to pay for care for you. That will cripple your family i can promise it (it costs a minimum of £500 a week for care in specialist units) and if they cant afford care (come on the NHS aint going to pay for it) then at least one of them is going to have to stop working and care for you 24/7.
Ive also seen a woman who had a fall from a horses and got brain damage ended up In EMI units (they wouldnt take her for long as they have other less troublesome people they can take and who wil pay the same for less work) and restrained because she got very very violent whenever anyone went into the room with her.

I persopnaly think your an absolute fool if you dont wear a safety hat. but hey ho its your choice as to whether you do that to yourself and your family.

I can tell you now that if my sister or my mum gave themselves serious brain damage due to not wearing a hat, then i would just walk away from the situation and let social services deal with the mess (social services are crap btw, placeing 30 yearold learning difficulties people in residential homes for the elderly etc) as im not sacrificeing my life for a silly mistake they made. Im not going to be the one living in poverty so i can care for them 24/7. Luckily neither my mum or my sister are silly enough to ride without a hat and thus thier insurance would cover them.

I absolutely disagree with that - if it is well fitted then it should not fall off your head and it will afford you *some* protection.

What people forget is that people of my age and older learnt to ride wearing hats made of cork! My favourite hat is an old Harry Hall one, and it has a fibre glass (?) shell and a cork lining, thats it. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to find some statistics to find out the deaths/brain injuries by horse riding then v now, because I do not think there would be a gaping hole TBH.

I agree am shocked that you have said that (not weezy by the way! the other poster) not very compassionate is it.

Even if you was wearing cotton wool on your head it would protect more then nothing so a beagler wouldnt be of no protection at all. Maybe not as much as a harnessed hat but it would still protect

I think I have opened a can of worms

I have a Charles Owen hat with a harness, so I know they fit me and the size I would need... Just looking on the websites at the moment of all the saddlery shops that stock them.

Becki - I found that the CO Beagler fits differently from the harnessed ones. It might be worth your while trying one on before you buy it as you might need to go down a size from your harnessed hat....

I too am thinking of buying a CO Beagler, I tried one on last week at Derby House and it looked extremely smart , just need to save up. I also grew up in the days of the fibreglass hat and in those days fell of nearly every week and to my knowledge I do not have brain damage - others may say differently - he! he!

Ah right... the problem is, Derby House do not seem to stock them anymore as not in their catalogue or on the website. That is the only place near here that stocks them

I have to agree on the Beagler on the elegance front, flesh coloured or not the 3 point harness does make a hat look more 'clunky'. I think its all down to personal choice; I wouldnt feel safe as my cob has a wicked swerve and I am very likely to fall out the side door on my head !!

I have just bought a limited edition GPA in chocolate and its lovely, so comfy !
Re : the demo, it was excellent ! Really practical advice, lovely horses and some nice riding - plus Kyra K with 25% off

Agreed Weezy, my beagler is a great fit and i would be surpised if it fell off! Each to their own tho, personally i wear mine and love it.

I didn't go in the shop... I was so well behaved!!!

I'm going looking in DH today for a beagler as competing tomorrow. I would definitely like one for the Winter Championships in April as they definitely look very elegant.

I was a Croft today so I did a quick straw poll - I reckon it was about 50/50 between Beaglers and the type with the flesh-coloured harness (would guess Charles Owen).

Do you do affiliated? What level do you compete at?

Maybe we will bump into each other... I was supposed to be going to Croft but forgot to send the entries off in time

I have been and bought a Beagler this afternoon... I have bought a Charles Owen one and it is the same size as my other, 6 7/8. I tried the larger one on, but the lady thought that although the 6 7/8 was slightly tight, she would be happier me wearing that one as it would give a little therefore become a perfect fit whereas the other would become a little too loose.

Yes this is the first year I have joined and he promptly bruised his feet, so so far I have entered a few and had to withdraw from every one - not a good season for me

Only been doing the novice but I do prefer it to the unaffiliated at Croft simply because you tend to get fewer people so more space when working in ! Watched the Advanced and PSG today, Silvia Schorn won the Advanced, and Lisa Marriot did a nice test in the PSG (on a lovely horse !) but i didnt stay till the end so I dont know who won. I admired her riding at the demo on Thursday, thought she looked very correct. I picked up the schedule for the affiliated shows for winter 2007/Spring 2008; you will have to let me know if you are going and I will look out for you

Although from what I remember Grace looked pretty impressive so I may hide instead !!
