I'm thinking of getting one (have wanted one for aages!) - what are the thoughts on different makes - the Patey ones are so smart but don't think my budget will stretch that far (does anyone know how much they actually are?).
The Charles Owen beaglers seem to be reasonably priced, does anyone have one, and are thery nice hats?

Pateys are £375 for the HY think all their caps are that price I also have a blue Charles Owen somewhere but much prefer my Patey!

I've got a charles owen, didnt cost anywhere near that much and i really like it.

Perhaps it depends on the shape of your head? Have heard of people that simply cant get them to fit - would be the case with any hat though i suppose
 
Lol! Though Pateys are lovely! I'm having a prob finding one to fit my humongous head at the mo...

Pateys are suited to some people heads better than others. They look silly on me and at £375 I am not that bothered. I have a CO beagler (around £95) and they do two version - high crown and normal. The high crown is more of a Patey shape. The Pateys are made to measure hence the price - however I know a few people who have ended up with very uncomfortable hats from Patey as they were too far away to take the hat back to be refitted.
 
i was going to get a patey one and got quoted £450 minimum by them!!!!! also you have to go to them and both their stores were miles away from me!!

ive got a lovely charles owen one now, a quarter of the price!!
 
i'm going to stick up for Patey i have been very luckly had my hat brought for me. And it's brilliant after 10 mins you don't even know it there, BUT they do have a huge price tag!!! but they are hand made. And P_G right you do need them fitted correctly, so you really need to buy at hugh show ie badders etc........
When i was looking for this type of hat someone on here put a link to a dutch site and their beagler hat looked brilliant and if i wasn't brought my Patey,i would have brought from dutch company at fraction of price
 
Just to rain on everyone's parade:
Why on earth would you want to pay a minimum of £100 for a hat, because it looks good but is as much use as a paper bag????

Not that I am against personal choice - hat or hatless its up to you, but I do think the latter is slightly foolish with the nature of horses.
 
I love my patey- so comfy and lovely! well worht the money but again i got mine bought for me! I had a charles owen one too but it was very soft a plyable in comparaosn so sold it on ebay. It also said inside it not to ride with it on- was for wlaking only. think they have updated the model since tho.

I must admit I don't get how the whole beagler thing is so acceptable at competition? I admit they do look beautiful and the vain side of me would LOVE one, but I just don't get it. The safest of safe horses can spook. At dressage clinics I've seen riders wearing them on very spooky green warmbloods. Why? It's lunacy.

yup you are write, my beagler says in it (its a charles owen one) not to be worn when mounted and im the first to admit that. However Bloss is as safe as you like out competing and i only wear it when i compete her BD. When i start competing Archie i will be wearing my proper standard hat. Everyone wears them in BD - im not saying its right just saying that its the 'norm'.

They are made to measure so can't see that they cant get one to fit.

Also they do lots of different styles not just the high crown but also a lower crown & also one with a squarer peak for a different look. They will also fit a leather harness to any of their hats as well & also make Polo caps so know all about safety standards. I got mine fitted at Myerscough & then had it tweaked at Bramham. Is the best hat ever & I would say offers good protection. I had one of the old skull caps come of before I hit the road when horse came down. There is NO WAY that my Patey will come off unless I remove it from my head.

Madness, utter madness. ( In general)

How can people think that competing dressage/BD is safer than competing under any other discipline/ 'body'?? This fashion for Beaglers is IMO very dangerous.
 
er, check any BD competitors hat and i can garentee you its not up to standard. i only compete her in it - she is as safe as houses to compete on. i dont hack out in it or school in it or ride my other horse in it. my choice imo and i was asking for opinions from anyone else, just saying.

ETS - i dont have to justify myself to anyone, and if you look above other people have said they ride in the same make beagler that i do.

It is entirely your choice as you say, however I cannot understand ANYONE who says

'i only compete her in it - she is as safe as houses to compete on.'

to my mind that is a very short sighted and asking for trouble. As my Mother used to say ' if all your friends jumped off a cliff would you jump as well?'

Its fashion and vanity put above, potentially, someones life.
 
how do you know how safe my horse is? You dont so you cant comment can you?

i dont think youve any right to judge and like i said other people on here were the same hat so why are you just picking on me?

ETS - i can wear what i want to wear its non of your business, so go sl*g me off on another forum like you have before.
 
I don't think Span was picking on you in general P_G, just the use of beaglers in general, as most people have the same attitude. I'm guilty of it too, as actively on the look out for one myself!!
 
It is indeed fashion and vanity and I wear one either at pure dressage or for the dressage phase eventing.

However, I wouldnt say any horse is safe as houses, they are unpredictable, even steady neddy winston

Spaniel is not picking on you

Every horse is a flight or fight animal - and whilst you may trust your horse, you cannot guarantee what other people are going to do (umbrellas, kids, bangs, flapping objects, PA systems)

It's a bit like driving a car and saying you don't need a seat belt because you are a very safe driver.... however what about the other berks on the road????
