Get over yourself P_G, its not ALL about you.

I was making the comments IN GENERAL and if you had read my post with less attitude maybe you would have seen that.

I have a friend who is, quite literally, a vegetable after walking her horse down the lane, mounted, wearing a hat. She too would have insisted this horse was the quetest and most reliable. You fancy seeing someone whose skull is so badly damaged that she needs 24 hour specialist care for the rest of her life???? Have you seen someone who cannot speak, breath, feed themselves, who is doubly incontinent??? This happened IN WALK, no traffic, no reason.

This womans life, that of her husband, her family and her children, is in tatters.

And if I want to slag ANYONE I do it to their face and certainly dont need to run off and do it behind someones back.

I've been pondering this for ages as studying the photos in H & H dressage results page there is never anyone who wears a hat with a harness. I think they look much nicer and would love to have one but not on my horse.
Patey with harness look weird I think

I have a Patey, it looks fab, they are beautifully made and are very nice hats, however, if I dont wear mine a lot, it changes shape, and gives me an awful head ache, I have had to have it refitted 3 times now. The chap says that its like a pair of new boots you have to wear them in and not just save it for shows, so during th esummer I took to wearing it all day and even sat at home eating dinner with the hat on much to OH's amusement!!! It actually moulded to my head very well. Havent worn it for several months now, so will be interesting to see if it has held my shape or not!!

I am so vain so have a beagler - but my hunt for a suitably qualified safety hat which looks great with leather straps goes on as of yet they either look rubbish or have been beyond my meagre budget.

QR as this is not aimed at anyone in particular but it really doesn't matter how well your hat fits or if it stays on, it is still not going to give you adequate protection. A friend of mine was riding her horse (who she knows extremely well) from her yard to her school and somehow came off (think the horse reared but she doesn't remember). Her hard hat - standard kite marked approved skull cap fully fastened - cracked in half. If she had been wearing eg a beagler it would have been her skull that cracked. No matter how well you know your horse or how safe you think it is is it really worth the risk.

Have to say that i too would be considered vain, and also have a beagler for dressage (its either that or a scull cap, as i cant get the normal riding hats to fit). I have had my gelding for years and years, and with the hundreds of hours i have spent riding him, never once has he done anything remotely dangerous, and i have been around many umbrellas and spooky objects - ive never fallen off him (probably will now after saying that!!!).

There was a post about this the other day, and i still stand by my point that it is entirely down to the individual what they chose to wear or not wear.

Tell you what is dangerous - me on a dancefloor, or even walking up stairs after a few drinks......ive had far worse accidents, including a head injury after a night out on the town!! think my horse is relatively safe compared to that!

P_G - Not sure what's gone on between u and Spaniel before, but in this context I do think you have take it to heart a little. There's people out there who think it's mad of anyone to ride without a standard hat - and I do think they have a point. My boy is "safe as houses" anywhere you take him and I would never entertain getting on him even in the arena at home without a hat - he never bucks, rears or anything stupid but he does have the odd spook and they can sometimes be quite sharp and could end up unseating me. No horse is immune to that spooking and a horse will catch you out completely unawares - sorry that sounds very patronising as you are an experienced rider. I've been at BD comps and seen horses unseat riders in the arena and go galloping around and around - with other horses and riders being affected and being wound up. You never know until it happens really. There are also many other distractions at comps - did a music PA system not unsettle your horse recently? I would be far more tempted to say that it was safer to ride in a Beagler at home than at competitions, but that's my opinion.

I am very tempted with purchasing a Beagler myself but am wrestling with the thought that they aren't standard and should something happen and I end up injured what then...? Yes I think they look smart, but being a man the straps on hats rub my stubble and cause huge soreness sometimes - especially if I end up having a sweaty session!!!

But am I using that as a justifiable reason to just look good? Maybe I am.

That happened to my Mother after she fell down the stairs at her home. Her brain hemmoraged so much that they would not operate & the next day I turned of her life support machine a watched for an hour whilst her body tried to stop working. So yes I do know what head trauma can end up like.
Should I start to wear my riding hat at all times now whilst indoors??

I hunt in my Patey so much more chance of me coming off & I have, have also been kicked in face by horse after falling off which any hat wouldnt of prevented. It is my uniform to wear a high crown hunting cap. Yes if I wanted I could ride in a "normal" riding hat but I dont feel that my saftey is at jeoperdy. Plus my family fully support me & haven't asked me to up my saftey stakes.

Bellgave you can buy a hat jack from Pateys for £25 to make sure that your hat doesn't shrink whilst drying out or in storage & will help stratch iot before you wear it. I bought one of ebay for £12 just before their leaflet came through my door!!

Huntress Im so sorry to hear about your Mother and fully respect that its your decision to wear a beagler hunting. However, no matter how much I respect your right to choose to wear it, I just cant understand your choice.

Spaniel please dont think I was launching a personal attack on your personal view I am also a sports injury therapist!
My Mum was 56 when she had her accident. (the fact that she fell at 8pm, the ambulance broke down on way to hospital so had to wait for another to collect her & then once at that hospital they decided to refer her to Leeds General to the neuro specialist unit at 1 am in the morning so it was 3 am before she got to a nuero specialist. I'm sure as hell didnt help. &yes I wonder if they had got air ambukance out straight away then the outcome may have been different or they my have decided to operate but she may well of ended u as a vegertable then. At least this way it was a fullstop for her as I know she wouldnt want to be on a machine to keep her "body" living. Plus 7 people benefited from her kidneys, liver, heart valves & cornea's. Yes I would rather that she was still her but you cant change that fact.
Her body make up was probably her down fall she was 5' & weighed 6.5 stone soaking wet. She only ever hit us once as a child & burst a blood vessel in her hand she was that thin skinned.
I am abig beliver in that when your time is up it is up & nothing will change that. Yes my wearing a "normal" riding hat you may extend that a little. I can see your point but people will or won't wear what they like.
I know for one think that my Mother would of been prob as punch to see me in scarlet which she never did get tha chance to though I know she is watching over me.

The Charles Owen beagler and the beagler classic are only designed for on foot wear, i.e. they conform to no set safety standard, however the majority of customers are buying them for dressage or hunting.

Its interesting that you can wear a beagler at BD and BE but not at Riding Club level.
I was stewarding at a RC ODE once and while checking tack I had to send several people back to get different hats as they had beaglers on and they all told me 'I can wear them for affiliated' one man in particular got quite annoyed with me!

Thats it really.........

I think the personal choice at home thing is one thing, but for the competition bodies to tolerate this seems like lunacy?

How can equestrianism of any genre that allows disregard for basic safety wear, be taken seriously as a sport. Sporting bodies are their to impose rules that protect the majority without hindering the sport.

Whilst beaglers are still competition legal, there will always be vanity to tempt riders to wear them. If I wore a beagler and happened to feel that I had influenced/impressed a younger rider to wear one, and that rider hurt themself as a result I'd be devastated.

Yes I want a beagler, they look stunning, but I'll never ride in one and that way I can be sure I've never influenced anyone, intentionally or otherwise.

general comment

------------------------------

gosh i always miss all the good stuff that goes on...........

I think people should get off their high horses about hats!!, at least folks are wearing them
and if there not and fall off that reduces gene pool and maybe put them up for Darwin Awards
And
IMO it should be personel choice and education should be the key....
so come on folks stick to original posting.......... about wearing a hat and wear to buy
